Erie, PA - The Penn State-Behrend Lions halted the 10 game winning streak of the D'Youville Men's Volleyball Team Tuesday night by defeating the Spartans with the final score of 3-1.
Penn State opened up the match by quickly showing they had every intention to end the Spartans 10 game winning streak, holding an early 8-2 lead. D'Youville made several attempts to not let the set get away from them early, but it wouldn't be until late when a kill from Brock Tetreault (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) sparked a 3 point run that would bring the Spartans to within 4. The Lions wouldn't allow D'Youville to get any closer, closing out the first set 25-19.
Determined not to let the second set get away like the first, D'Youville came out much sharper after their opening set loss. Evan Singer (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) tied the game at 1, but Brett Cawthorn (West Seneca, NY/St. Francis), Matt Loos (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) and Chris Busha (Hamburg, NY/St. Francis) all quickly joined in on the action to give the team a 15-11 lead. Behrend would pull the game to within 1 point but big plays from Busha, Loos and Tetreault would allow the team to gain some cushion. Again the Lions would come back to tie the game at 24. However, a kill from Tetreault followed by a block from Loos and Cawthorn gave the Spartans a 26-24 win in the second set to tie the match.
Set number three would turn out to be yet another thrilling match between the two teams. Penn State jumped out to an early 6-3 lead, but it wouldn't be long before the Spartans tied the game up at 9. The Lions would take over the lead once again at 15-11, but D'Youville turned up the intensity notching 8 unanswered points, including 7 straight serves from Tetreault. Berhend would rally and tie the game up at 24, eventually overtaking the Spartans and winning the third set by the score of 28-26.
For the third consecutive set, both teams would play with intensity and challenge each other for the win. D'Youville held an early 8-4 lead until Penn State came back to tie the game at 8. Each team would go on spurts of scoring 3 consecutive points until the Lions took over with a 17-16 lead and wouldn't allow the Spartans to get back into the game. Behrend closed the match by winning the fourth set 25-21, ending the Spartans 10 game winning streak.
