Buffalo, NY - In their fourth match in three days, the D'Youville Men's Volleyball Team lost to the visiting Carthage Reds Sunday afternoon by the final score of 3-0.
Before the game started, the three seniors on the men's volleyball team were honored for their Spartan careers. Alex Johnson (Lancaster, NY/Clarence), Evan Singer (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) and Steve Goedtel (Eden, NY/Eden) each have played a large role in the team's success this season.
To begin the game, D'Youville held a 2-0 lead after a Singer kill early on in the first set. Carthage took over the lead after scoring 4 straight points to lead 4-2. The Spartans would tie the game at 5 with another kill from Singer. The Reds would go on to outscore the Spartans 6-2 in the next several minutes. D'Youville would trail 20-16 after a Brett Cawthorn (West Seneca, NY/St. Francis) kill, but the visiting Reds would go on to take the first set 25-18.
Carthage took control of the set from the jump. Out to an early 7-2 lead, the Reds would keep the offense rolling. Two kills from Chris Busha (Hamburg, NY/St. Francis) and Brock Tetreault (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) off of Collin McMahon (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) assists made the score 15-10, Carthage. The Reds would take their lead to the end, winning the second set 25-16.
For the second straight set, Carthage went up early on the Spartans 9-4. D'Youville pulled within 3 to trail 13-10, but the Reds would extend their lead to 17-11. Three consecutive points would cut the deficit to three points at 17-14. Despite their late push, the Spartans wouldn't be able to close the gap and would fall to the Carthage Reds 25-20 in the third set, and would lose the match by the score of 3-0.
Tetreault was the team leader in both kills and digs with 8 each. Singer tallied the second highest kills on the team with 6, while Cawthorn and Busha each totaled 4. Singer would lead the team in blocks with 3, followed by Matt Loos (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) and McMahon with 2 each. Johnson had 3 digs, along with Goedtel.
The next game for the Spartans comes against Keuka on Saturday, March 28th at 2pm at Medaille.
