Buffalo, NY - The D'Youville Men's Volleyball Team suffered a loss to the visiting NYU Bobcats Saturday afternoon by the final score of 3-1.
NYU was sloppy to open the match, down 4-0 on due in large part to 3 straight attack errors from the team. The Bobcats clawed back into the game by drilling several service aces and D'Youville mistakes. Brock Tetreault (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) would give the Spartans their final lead of the set at 9-8 until NYU took over the set. The Bobcats would outscore the Spartans 17-7 to finish out the set and take it by the final score of 25-16.
In the second set, NYU would not make the same mistakes as the first. Tied at 1 from an Evan Singer (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) kill would be the closest D'Youville would come to the Bobcats in the second match. NYU would control the set in its entirety, winning by the score of 25-11.
The Spartans would look like a completely different team in the third set. Facing elimination, D'Youville would play even with their New York City guests through early on. Playing in his first game since injury earlier in the season, Collin McMahon (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) would come in and hand out several big assists to Brett Cawthorn (West Seneca, NY/St. Francis), Chris Busha (Hamburg, NY/St. Francis) and Singer. D'Youville would have a 19-15 lead over the Bobcats, holding off a late charge to win the set 25-22.
Once again hoping to hold off elimination, D'Youville would play tough in the fourth set against the Bobcats. With an 11-8 lead off a kill from Tetreault, NYU would score 5 unanswered to take the lead. The Spartans would get within 3 of the lead, but it was ultimately too late as NYU would take the set 25-22, winning the game 3-1.
Tetreault led the team with 9 kills on Saturday afternoon. Singer had 7 for second on the team, with Cawthorn, Busha, Matt Loos (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) and Steve Goedtel (Eden, NY/Eden) also recording kills. McMahon and Tetreault were the lone Spartans to record service aces in the game.
Alex Johnson (Lancaster, NY/Clarence) was the team leader in digs with 8, followed by Cawthorn's 6. All 8 of the Spartans recorded at least 1 dig in the game. Loos was the team leader with 4 block assists and McMahon had 3. McMahon had a team high 18, with Busha tallying 6.
The next game for the men comes on Sunday, March 22nd at 12:30pm against Carthage. Before the game begins, the team's 3 seniors will be honored as part of the team's senior game.
