Buffalo, NY - After finishing the season as the second overall seed in the NEAC, the D'Youville Men's Volleyball Team defeated third seeded Wells College Saturday afternoon in the NEAC Semi-Finals by the final score of 3-0.
The two teams started off the first set as equals, having a tied game at 4, 6, 8 and 10. D'Youville took a 16-15 lead after a kill from NEAC First Team All-Conference member and NEAC Rookie of the Year Brock Tetreault (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island). Wells retook the lead at 21-18 and would continue to hold that lead late in the set. Down late, a service ace from Collin McMahom (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) and then a kill from Tetreault capped off the first set comeback, giving D'Youville the 31-29 win.
In the second set, D'Youville picked up their intensity and took control of the match. Tied early on at 5, the Spartans took over. Matt Loos (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) started off the Spartan scoring run with a service ace. That sparked a 5-0 scoring run to give D'Youville a 10-5 lead. Evan Singer (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) smashed a kill and then recorded a block with Brett Cawthorn (West Seneca, NY/St. Francis) kept the scoring going. From when the score was 15-8 D'Youville, the Spartans went a 10-4 scoring run to close out the second set 25-13.
Wells and D'Youville played to a tie at 13 in the third set, but an attacking error from Wells and two Loos kills pushed the score to 16-13 Spartans. The Express would score one point to make the game 16-14, but that would be the closest they got for the rest of the set. D'Youville would take the set 25-21 and take the match 3-0, winning their first semi-final game in the NEAC and advancing to the championship game on Sunday.
As he has done for most of the season, Brock Tetreault led the team in kills. His 14 were followed by Loos' 12 and 6 each from seniors Steve Goedtel (Eden, NY/Eden) and Singer. Chris Busha (Hamburg, NY/St. Francis) led the team in assists with 37. Goedtel led the team in digs with 15, followed by Cawthorn's 12 and 11 from Alex Johnson (Clarence, NY/Clarence).
D'Youville, the second seed in the NEAC Playoffs, advance to play the number one overall seeded Medaille Mavericks on Sunday at 1pm for the NEAC Championship Game. The game will be held at Medaille.
