Union, NJ – The D'Youville men's volleyball team began their 2016 season on Thursday afternoon by going 1-1 at the first day of the Kean Tournament.
The Spartans defeated Mount Saint Vincent in their first match of the season 3-1, with the scores of each set 25-21, 17-25, 25-17 and 25-19. In his first game for D'Youville, freshman Alex Ritter (Pittsburgh, PA/Our Lady of the Sacred Heart) led the team with 13 kills. Senior Brett Cawthorn (West Seneca, NY/St. Francis) was second with 12 kills, and Matt Loos (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) had 8. Loos also added 6 total blocks.
In the first set, Mount Saint Vincent held an early 9-5 lead over the Spartans. D'Youville tied the game at 14 and eventually took a 16-14 lead. They would hold their lead and eventually win the set 25-21. Mount Saint Vincent took hold of the lead early on in the second set and held off the Spartans for the entire set, winning 25-17.
After the score was tied 4-4, D'Youville would not surrender the lead for the remainder of the set. Mount Saint Vincent would come close as they were down 13-12, but the Spartans eventually grew their lead to 7 and won the third set 25-17.
In the fourth set, Mount Saint Vincent led early but D'Youville came back and tied the game at 13. D'Youville gave back the lead but then quickly regained form and took over the lead and would go on to win the set 25-19 and the match 3-1.
D'Youville would quickly turn around to play their second match of the day against Hunter. The Spartans would even their record at 1-1, losing to Hunter 3-2. The set scores were 29-27, 22-25, 25-17, 17-25 and 13-15.
Cawthorn led the team with 14 kills, followed by Tetreault with 11 and Loos with 10. Ritter added 9 kills and 8 digs. Freshman Ryan Kilijanski (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West) led the team with 13 digs. Busha had a team high 40 assists.
In the first set, the Spartans had a late 19-15 lead, but Hunter would fight back and take a 21-19 lead. The two teams were tied at 27 until the Spartans closed out the first set with the final 2 points, winning 29-27. Hunter took the second set 25-22 after holding off a late Spartan rally to tie the game at 1.
D'Youville was in complete control of the third set from the get-go. The team had a 16-8 lead, eventually winning 25-17. Hunter flipped the script in the fourth set, this time taking control of the set and winning by the same score of 25-17.
The two teams played very even in the fifth and deciding set. D'Youville looked to have control of the set with a 10-6 lead, but Hunter battled back to tie the game at 11 and then look the lead 12-11. The two teams tied at 13 but Hunter then scored the final 2 points, winning the set 15-13 and the game 3-2.
The men will play next tomorrow, January 15th in the second day of the Kean Tournament. D'Youville will face host Kean at 12pm and Johnson & Wales at 2pm.
