Spartans Upset Nationally Ranked Kean In Final Day of Tournament

Union, NJ – The D'Youville men's volleyball team ended day two of the Kean Tournament with a 3-0 victory over nationally ranked Kean and a 3-1 loss to Johnson & Wales.

In the first match of the day, the Spartans faced off against the eleventh ranked Kean Cougars and defeated them by the score of 3-0. Each set was closely played between the two teams, but D'Youville prevailed in each set with the scores 26-24, 25-20 and 28-26.

Brock Tetreault (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) led the team with 15 kills in the match, followed by 8 from Brett Cawthorn (West Seneca, NY/St. Francis) and 6 from Alex Ritter (Pittsburgh, PA/Our Lady of the Sacred Heart). Chris Busha (Hamburg, NY/St. Francis) had a team high 26 assists. Tetreault also led the team in digs with 10 with Ryan Kilijanski (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West) recording 9.

D'Youville trailed 9-5 early to the nationally ranked Cougars. The Spartans battled back to trail by 2 after a kill from Tetreault and then a kill from Logan Krass (Oswego, NY/Oswego) tied the match at 16. The men rattled off 5 straight points to take their first lead of the match and held off Kean to the end, winning 26-24.

The Cougars overcame an early deficit to take a 7-6 lead over the Spartans and then again at 11-9. However, D'Youville went on a 9-2 run, taking a 18-13 lead over Kean. The Cougars came within 1 point of tying the game but the Spartans were too strong once again, winning the second set 25-20.

Kean looked to get back in the match in the third set and were out to a 10-5 lead. The Cougars led late in the set 20-14 and were within 1 point of winning the set at 24-20, but D'Youville was resilient in their efforts and came back to tie the set at 24. The Spartans then turned it on and finished off the comeback, winning against the eleventh ranked Kean 28-26.

In their second match of the day, the Spartans were defeated by Johnson & Wales 3-1. D'Youville lost by the set scores of 27-25, 22-25, 25-14 and 25-22.

Tetreault led the team in kills for the second straight match. His 18 were a season high, followed by 13 from Cawthorn. Kilijanski had a team high 15 digs and Busha again led the team in assists with 39. Matt Loos (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) had 3 total blocks to go with 6 kills. Collin McMahon (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) had an assist and a dig.

D'Youville and Johnson & Wales went back and forth in the first set. The Wildcats were down against the Spartans at 21-19 but came back to tie the set at 23 all. The Spartans were within 1 point of winning but the Wildcats came back to win the set 27-25.

In the second set, the Spartans were tied with the Wildcats at 10 but then took control. They led 20-16 but Johnson & Wales then cut the lead to 21-20. D'Youville pulled away at the end to win 25-22.

The third set was all the Wildcats. They led early and carried their lead to the end, winning the set 25-14. D'Youville led early in the fourth set but Johnson & Wales came back to tie the set at 12. The Wildcats then pulled away and won the set 25-22 and the match 3-1.

D'Youville will return to Buffalo for their next match on Thursday, January 28th at 7pm against Hilbert. The match is the first home match of the season for the Spartans.
