Buffalo, NY - The D'Youville men's volleyball team opened up their home schedule with a loss to the Hilbert Hawks on Thursday evening by the final score of 3-0.
D'Youville was out to an early 6-4 lead in the first set but Hilbert quickly came back to tie the game at 6. The Spartans then scored 3 unanswered points to take 9-6 lead, but the Hawks would come back to tie the game at 9 and then take the lead at 10-9. Hilbert would then begin to take control of the set, holding a 16-12 lead.
The Hawks would lead 23-18 late in the set but D'Youville came back to trail 24-21. D'Youville would fall short in their comeback attempt in set number one as the Hawks took an early lead in the match with a 25-21 victory.
In the second set, the Hawks were up early and held off the Spartan's rallies several times. D'Youville tied the game at 11 before Hilbert took a 4-point lead. D'Youville came back to trail 18-17 and then trailed 24-23 after trailing 24-21, but the Hawks would hold off the Spartans and take the second set 25-23.
Hilbert continued to control the match in the third set. Down 8-7, the Hawks scored 9 of the next 10 points and took a 15-9 lead. The Spartans attempted to get back in the game but the Hawks were too much too early and took the third set 25-18 and the match 3-0.
Sophomore Brock Tetreault (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) led the team in kills with 14 kills, followed by 7 from Matt Loos (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) and 6 from Alex Ritter (Pittsburgh, PA/Our Lady of the Sacred Heart). Tetreault, Ritter and Brett Cawthorn (West Seneca, NY/St. Francis) all had 6 kills, one behind Ryan Kilijanski (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West) who had 7. Chris Busha (Hamburg, NY/St. Francis) led the team with 29 assists. Evan Singer (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) added 2 kills and Collin McMahon (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) added a service aced and 2 digs.
The Spartans will get back to game action next weekend as they head to Nazareth for the Golden Flyer Invite. D'Youville will have an opportunity to make up for today's loss as they play Hilbert in the first day of the tournament. The two teams will play on Friday, February 5th at 6pm.
