Rochester, NY – The D'Youville men's volleyball team opened up the Golden Flyer Invite on Friday evening with back-to-back losses to the Hilbert Hawks and host Nazareth Golden Flyers.
In their first match of the day, D'Youville faced the Hilbert Hawks to whom they lost their last match to. Hilbert defeated the Spartans 3-1 by the scores of 25-19, 32-30, 15-25 and 25-16.
Hilbert was out to an early lead in the first set 3-1. The Hawks would continue to lead at 9-7 but the Spartans would come back and take the lead at 11-10. Despite taking the lead, D'Youville gave up 7 consecutive points and would go on to win the first set by the score of 25-19.
D'Youville took a 17-11 lead in the second set, but Hilbert would roar back to tie the set at 20. Hilbert would lead 24-22 with a chance to win the set but the Spartans would come back to take a 25-24 lead. The two teams would play to a tie at 30-30 but the Hawks would take the final 2 points and win the set 32-30.
The Spartans were in control of the third set from the beginning with an 8-4 lead. Hilbert pulled to within 3 at 16-13 but D'Youville continued to dominate and win the third set 25-15.
The Hawks would come back in the fourth set and lead 10-6. Hilbert would extend their lead to 19-13 and win the set 25-16 and the match 3-1.
Sophomore Brock Tetreault (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) led the team in kills with 10 and was second with 8 digs. Senior Chris Busha (Hamburg, NY/St. Francis) led the team with 32 assists, 15 digs and tied with Evan Singer (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville East) with a team high 8 total blocks. Singer and Alex Ritter (Pittsburgh, PA/Our Lady of the Sacred Heart) each added 8 kills.
D'Youville would play the host of the invite in their second match of the day, the Nazareth Golden Flyers. Nazareth swept the Spartans in straight sets by the scores of 25-16, 25-15 and 25-12.
The Golden Flyers never trailed in the first set. Nazareth opened up a 6-1 lead and extend their lead to 21-13. They would go on to win the first set 25-16. The second set would be more of the same as Nazareth led by 10 at 23-13 and would win the second set 25-15. In the third set, the Golden Flyers continued to dominate as they went on to win 25-12.
Tetreault led the team in kills yet again with 7. Brett Cawthorn (West Seneca, NY/St. Francis) and Ryan Kilijanski (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West) tied for the team lead in digs with 5. Matt Loos (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) added 6 kills.
D'Youville will play again in day two of the Golden Flyer Invite on Saturday at 1pm against Elmira and 3pm against Johnson & Wales.
