Golden Flyer Invite Ends With Spartans Going Winless

Rochester, NY – The D'Youville men's volleyball team went winless for a second straight day at the Golden Flyer Invite, losing to Elmira 3-2 and Johnson & Wales 3-2.

D'Youville had Elmira on the ropes in their first match of the day. The Spartans overcame an early 7-2 lead by the Soaring Eagles to come back and take the first set 25-21. Elmira answered in the second set by taking a 19-14 lead after the two teams were tied 12-12 and winning the set 25-20. In the third set, D'Youville pulled away from a 14-13 lead to a 25-19 final score and up 2-1, looking to take the match in the fourth set.

Elmira was resilient in the fourth. The two teams were tied at 10-10 before the Golden Eagles went on a 9-3 scoring run and took a commanding lead. D'Youville fought back to tie the set at 23, but Elmira forced a fifth set after taking the last 2 points and winning 25-23.

In the fifth set, the Golden Eagles looked to be in control with a 10-6 lead. However, the Spartans came back and trailed 13-12 and then 14-13. Despite their late push, Elmira would go on to win the set 15-13 and the match 3-2.

Sophomore Brock Tetreault (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) led the team with 17 kills and added 9 digs. Matt Loos (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) was second on the team with 9 kills and Alex Ritter (Pittsburgh, PA/Our Lady of the Sacred Heart) chipped in with 6. Chris Busha (Hamburg, NY/St. Francis) led the team with 37 assists and Ryan Kilijanski (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West) had a team high 10 digs.

In the second match of the day, the Spartans again saw the same result against Johnson & Wales. D'Youville was in control of the first set throughout, holding an 8-2 lead and going on to win 25-20 without ever trailing. Johnson & Wales then flipped the script on the Spartans by never trailing in the second set and going on to win 25-17.

The two teams were even throughout the third set. Both teams tied at 7, 15 and 23, but the Spartans would hold on at the end to defeat the Wildcats 25-22.

Looking to hold off the Spartans and keep the match alive, Johnson & Wales took off from a 5-5 tie early on to extend their lead to 17-12 halfway through the set. The Wildcats would continue to surge and win the fourth set 25-21. In the fifth set, the two teams were tied at 3 but Johnson & Wales would turn it up and win the set 15-8 and the match 3-2.

Leading the team in kills again was Tetreault, who tallied 15 against the Wildcats. Ritter added 10 and Loos 8 as Busha led the team with 34 assists. Brett Cawthorn (West Seneca, NY/St. Francis) led the team with 6 digs. All 9 players recorded at least a dig in the match.

D'Youville will play again on Wednesday, February 10th at 7pm as they travel to Erie, PA to play the Penn State-Behrend Lions.
