Buffalo, NY – The D'Youville men's volleyball team went 1-1 in the opening day of the NEAC Crossover on Saturday afternoon, falling to SUNYIT 3-0 and defeating Wells 3-1.
In their first match of the day against the SUNYIT Wildcats, D'Youville led 10-6 in the first set. The Wildcats came back to tie the game at 13 but the Spartans would go back up on SUNYIT with a 19-18 lead. D'Youville would then come back from a 21-19 deficit to retake their lead at 23-22. However, the Wildcats would score four of the final five points in the set and win 27-25.
The Spartans would take a 16-11 lead in the second set after overcoming a 14-9 deficit. SUNYIT would then have their own comeback, tying the game at 23. With their first win of the match in reach at 24-23, the Spartans would allow SUNYIT to overcome them and win the second set 26-24.
The third set was similar between the two teams, with the Wildcats jumping out to an early 12-5 lead. D'Youville would close the gap to four but SUNYIT would power their way to victory, winning the third set 25-20 and the match 3-0.
Freshman Alex Ritter (Pittsburgh, PA/Our Lady of the Sacred Heart) led the team with 11 kills and two service aces. Matt Loos (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) led the team with four total blocks and added 8 kills. Sophomore Brock Tetreault (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) had 6 digs.
For their second match of the day, D'Youville would face off against the Wells Express. Wells was in control for nearly all of the first set. Leading 13-7, the Express would extend their lead to nine. The Spartans trailed 22-18 before they scored four unanswered points to tie the set at 22. However, Wells would score the next three points and win the set 25-22.
The second set began and the Spartans immediately took a commanding lead. Up 6-1 over the Express, D'Youville increased their lead to 11 at 21-10 and would coast to a 25-15 second set win.
D'Youville would continue their dominance in the third set where they went up big early for an 11-1 lead. Wells would bring the score to within eight but the Spartans turned it on again and would win the third set 25-12.
Wells looked to stave off elimination in the fourth set but was down to the Spartans 10-5. The Express would overcome their early deficit to take a 17-16 lead, but D'Youville scored four straight to take a 20-17 lead. Tied at 22-22, the Spartans would score three straight and win the fourth set 25-22 and win the match 3-1.
Tetreault led the team in kills with 14 in the second match of the day. Chris Busha (Hamburg, NY/St. Francis) had an outstanding performance, leading the team with 39 assists and was second on the team with 13 digs and 10 kills. Ritter added 10 kills as well; with Brett Cawthorn (West Seneca, NY/St. Francis) recording a team high 14 digs.
Loos had a team high four total blocks with eight kills and Tetreault chipped in with 12 digs and two service aces. Evan Singer (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville East) recorded nine kills with two total blocks and three assists. Collin McMahon (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) had a team high six service aces.
D'Youville will play Keuka tomorrow at 2pm in the second day of the NEAC Crossover.
