Spartans Lose Third Straight with Loss to SUNYIT Sunday

Marcy, NY – The D'Youville men's volleyball team dropped their third straight match this weekend, falling to the SUNYIT Wildcats by the final score of 3-1.

The first set was tied 5-5 before the Wildcats scored four straight points and took a 9-5 lead. D'Youville would return to within one point of the lead by trailing 12-13, but SUNYIT would score five of the next six points and take an 18-13 lead. The Wildcats would take their lead to the end, winning the first set 25-18.

D'Youville would recover from a four-point deficit to come back and tie the second set 10-10. SUNYIT would then take control of the set, scoring 10 of the next 13 points and took a 20-13 lead over the Spartans. The Wildcats would again take their lead to the end, winning the second set 25-16.

In the third set, the two teams would remain close early on once again. D'Youville held an 11-9 lead before going on a run and taking a 17-12 lead over the Wildcats. The Spartans would go on to hold stave off elimination and win the third set 25-18.

Looking to tie the match a 2-2, D'Youville opened up a 5-0 lead over SUNYIT in the fourth set. The Wildcats came back to trail by one at 7-6, but the Spartans would regain a five point lead at 13-8. SUNYIT would charge late and overcome the Spartan's early lead, winning the set 25-18 and the match 3-1.

Freshman Alex Ritter (Pittsburgh, PA/Our Lady of the Sacred Heart) led the team with nine kills. Matt Loos (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) added six kills and a team high five total blocks. Brett Cawthorn (West Seneca, NY/St. Francis) recorded seven digs and four total blocks to place second on the team in both categories.

Logan Krass (Oswego, NY/Oswego) had five kills with Ryan Kilijanski (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West) led the team with eight digs. Setter Collin McMahon (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) led the team with 14 assists, followed by Chris Busha (Hamburg, NY/St. Francis), who recorded 10.

The men will return home for their next match on Tuesday, March 15th to host the Penn State-Behrend Lions at 7pm.
