Spartans Fight Back Against Lions In Thrilling Win

Buffalo, NY – The D'Youville men's volleyball team broke their three game losing-skid on Tuesday evening, defeating the Penn State-Behrend Lions 3-2.

D'Youville took an early four-point lead over the Lions in the first set at 9-5. Behrend would then go on a run, taking nine of twelve points to take a 14-12 lead. The Spartans would then come back to tie and retake the lead at 18-15. One-point away from taking the first set at 24-21, the Spartans would surrender four consecutive points to the Lions and they would take a 25-24 lead. However, D'Youville would score the final three points of the set and take a 1-0 lead with a 27-25 win.

In the second set, the two teams would battle each other closely once again. The Spartans took a 10-8 lead but were matched by the Lions as the two tied an 18-18 after exchanging points. Behrend grabbed a 20-18 lead before D'Youville would score seven of nine points and win the second set 25-22, taking a 2-0 lead.

The Spartans looked to close out the match in the third set after taking a 17-13 lead. Behrend would storm back with six unanswered points to overtake the Spartans at 19-17. D'Youville retook the lead at 24-22, but couldn't score one more point as the Lions scored four unanswered and won the third set 26-24.

Behrend aimed to tie the game in the fourth set and took a 12-9 lead over the Spartans. The Lions opened up a six-point lead at 18-12 and then took a 22-16 lead before the Spartans would come back to make the game close at 23-21. However, Penn State would hold off the charging Spartans and win the set 25-22 to tie the match at 2-2 and force a deciding game five.

As they did in the second set, the Spartans grabbed a 10-8 lead in the fifth set. The two-point lead would be the largest separation between the two teams until the end of the set as they battled back-and-forth, tying nine times and exchanging the lead several times. D'Youville was on the cusp of winning the match at 14-13, but the Lions would get a point to tie it up at 14.

Behrend then had chances to win the match at 16-15 and 17-16 but the Spartans were resilient and continue to fight on. Tied at 21-21, D'Youville took a point to lead 22-21 and would finally capture the deciding point on a block and win the fifth set 23-21 and the match 3-2.

The match set new career highs for two Spartans. Sophomore Brock Tetreault (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) recorded 26 kills in the match to reach a new career high, also adding 12 digs, four total blocks and two service aces. Senior Chris Busha (Hamburg, NY/St. Francis) had a new career high of 56 assists with eight digs, six total blocks, six kills and three service aces.

Senior Matt Loos (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) paired with Busha to win the game on a block while totaling seven total blocks in the match. Evan Singer (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) led the team with eight total blocks and added 10 kills. Brett Cawthorn (West Seneca, NY/St. Francis) led the team with 13 digs.

Freshmen Alex Ritter (Pittsburgh, PA/Our Lady of the Sacred Heart) and Ryan Kilijanski (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West) each added 10 digs, with Ritter adding 15 kills. Junior Collin McMahon (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) had two service aces with three digs in the match.

The men will play their final home game of the season on Thursday, March 17th against Medaille at 7pm in the College Center Gym. Thursday's game will also be the team's senior game.
