Buffalo, NY – The D'Youville men's volleyball team fell to the Medaille Mavericks in their final home game of the 2016 season by the final score of 3-1.
Medaille was up early over the Spartans, taking a 7-2 lead. D'Youville began to come back and was down 14-7 but the Mavericks would pull away to the tune of a 19-9 lead and eventually take the first set by the score of 25-15.
The two teams were tied in the early goings of the second set before the Spartans broke an 11-11 tie, taking a 14-12 lead. Medaille would come back soon after losing the lead and take a 16-15 lead of their own before D'Youville took the lead back at 20-17. On the brink of winning the second set at 24-22, D'Youville surrendered two straight points to tie the game at 24. The Spartans had the one-point lead and the chance to win the game at 28-27 and finished off the Mavericks in the second set with a 29-17 win.
In the third set, the score was tied 6-6 before Medaille would begin a run and lead 13-8. However, D'Youville went on a run of their own to trail 13-12 before the Mavericks would extend their lead to 18-15. The Mavericks would then go on a 7-1 scoring run and win the third set 25-16.
The Mavericks looked to finish off the Spartans in the fourth set and were out to a 10-6 lead. D'Youville came back to trail by two but Medaille then went on a run to take a 19-12 lead. The Spartans then scored six of the next seven points to trail 20-18, but the Mavericks would close out the fourth set with a 25-22 victory and win the match 3-1.
Following a career evening on Tuesday, senior Chris Busha (Hamburg, NY/St. Francis) led the team again with 33 assists in the match. Sophomore Brock Tetreault (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) tallied a team high 11 kills, followed by eight from Matt Loos (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) and seven each from Brett Cawthorn (West Seneca, NY/St. Francis) and Alex Ritter (Pittsburgh, PA/Our Lady of the Sacred Heart).
Freshman Ryan Kilijanski (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West) led the team with 10 digs while Loos led the team with eight total blocks. Cawthorn and Tetreault each had four total blocks while Tetreault and Busha had six digs each.
The men will travel to Hilbert to play Vassar tomorrow evening at 6pm for their next match.
