Buffalo, NY – The D'Youville men's volleyball team suffered a loss on Thursday evening to the visiting Elmira Soaring Eagles by the final score of 3-0.
Elmira went up over the Spartans 8-2 after the score was tied a 2-2. They then extended their lead to nine at 15-5 before D'Youville came storming back and trailed by one at 15-14. The Soaring Eagles would get some breathing room as they extended their lead to four and they would go on to win the first set 25-20.
The two teams were close early in the second set at the Spartans trailed 9-8 until Elmira went on a run to create a 14-8 lead. Their lead then grew to seven at 18-11 before the Soaring Eagles would hold off a late Spartan run to win the set 25-19.
After a 2-2 score to begin the third, Elmira scored 11 unanswered points to create a large cushion between the two teams. The Soaring Eagles then pushed their lead to 12 at 19-7 and then scored six of the next seven points to win the set 25-8 and the match 3-0.
Ryan Kilijanski (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West) led the team with five kills, adding one block. Pat Stroh (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg), Zach Bochacki (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West) and Logan Krass (Oswego, NY/Oswego) each had four kills. Karl Jauch (Lockport, NY/Starpoint) added one kill.
Senior Collin McMahon (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) led the team with 15 assists and three service aces, while James Zeiger (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) had two digs. Chance MacDowell (Bloomfield, NY/Bloomfield) led the team with five digs.
The next game for the men comes on Friday, March 25 as the Spartans play Lancaster Bible at Hilbert. Game time is 8pm.
