Erie, PA – The D'Youville men's volleyball team played their first conference match of the season on Thursday evening as they were defeated by the Penn State-Behrend Lions by the final score of 3-0.
Behrend was our early over the Spartans as D'Youville kept the score within a point through the first several points. Leading 6-5, the Lions would go on a run and build a 14-7 lead, but the Spartans would cut that deficit to four at 15-11. Of the next 14 points scored, 10 were scored by Behrend as they would go on to win the first set 25-15.
D'Youville came out aggressive in the second set, matching Behrend point-for-point. The Spartans led 10-8 before the Lions would come back and take the lead. Up 16-13, Behrend would go on another run to close out a set as they outscored the Spartans 9-5 to win the second set 25-18.
The third set was close to start off yet again, but Behrend would jump out to a three-point lead at 9-6. That lead would grow to 15-10 before D'Youville pulled back to within two at 15-13. Like the first and second sets, the Lions would go outscore the Spartans down the stretch and defeat the D'Youville 25-17 in the third and 3-0 in the match.
Pat Stroh (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) led the team with 12 kills and seven digs in the match. Evan Oliver (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) recorded a team high 19 assists, adding four digs and two kills. Ryan Kilijanski (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West) added four kills and three digs with Ali Khadra (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville East) tallying six kills.
The Spartans will next host their first quad match of the season on Sunday, February 17 as they host play St. John Fisher at 12:00pm and Daemen at 4:00pm.
