Dallas, PA - The D'Youville men's volleyball team traveled to Misericordia on Saturday as they fell to the Elizabethtown Blue Jays 3-0 and the Misericordia Cougars 3-0.
Elizabethtown had a strong first set in the first match of the day for D'Youville, defeating the Spartans 25-9. The second set saw both teams battle back-and-forth with the set tied at 23-23 late. The Blue Jays would then close the second with a 27-25 victory. In the third, Elizabethtown carried their late momentum from the second as they took the set 25-14 and the match 3-0.
Dan Busha (Hamburg, NY/St. Francis) led the team with eight kills while Mitch Mason (Eden, NY/Eden) recorded a team-high 12 digs. Ali Khadra (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville East) contributed seven kills with Karl Jauch (Lockport, NY/Starpoint) tallying 18 assists. Anthony Dean (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Falls) chipped in with four kills as Danny Steck (Lancaster, NY/St. Francis) had two.
Match number two saw the Spartans get out to an early 7-3 lead in the first set. Misericordia would come back to take a 21-17 lead and to win the set 25-17. The Cougars would then come out strong in the second set with a 12-1 lead. They would then carry that strong play to the end to win the second 25-13. After the third set was tied 10-10, Misericordia would pick up the pace and take a 22-14 lead. They would then go on to win the third 25-17 and the match 3-0.
Busha again led the team with eight kills, followed by Joshua Hoy (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) with five. Jauch tallied 14 assists with Mason recording 11 digs. Khadra had four blocks with William Anderson (Lake View, NY/Frontier) and Juan Centeno (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville North) each seeing their first match as Spartans. Troy Stancampiano (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville East) tallied an assist in the loss while Dean recorded three kills.
The next series of matches for the Spartans will come next weekend as they travel to Nazareth for the Golden Flyer Invite. They will first play Johnson and Wales on Friday at 6:00pm on Friday, February 7 and then play UC Santa Cruz and Lasell on Saturday, February 8.
