Rochester, NY - The D'Youville men's volleyball team completed their weekend at the Golden Flyer Invite with a pair of 3-0 losses to the UC Santa Cruz Banana Slugs and the Lasell Lasers.
It was a close first set against UC Santa Cruz early on as the Spartans trailed by two early, but the Banana Slugs would go on a big run to close out the first just a few points later to take the first 25-14. The second saw the two teams go back-and-forth for a majority of the set, heading into the final points tied at 22. Santa Cruz was then able to close out the match in extra points, winning 28-26. Then in the third, D'Youville put up a strong fight with the score tired at 13, but the Banana Slugs went on another late run to win the third 25-18 and the match 3-0.
Ali Khadra (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville East) led the team with 10 kills, followed by Dan Busha (Hamburg, NY/St. Francis) with nine and Anthony Dean (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Falls) with six. Danny Steck (Lancaster, NY/St. Francis) recorded three blocks while Karl Jauch (Lockport, NY/Starpoint) had 18 assists and Mitch Mason (Eden, NY/Eden) had 10 digs.
Match number two of the day saw Lasell lead early and extended their lead late into the first before the Spartans would come back to trail by one at 19-20. However, the Lasers would close out the first with a 25-22 victory. The second saw Lasell hold off D'Youville as they made a mid-set run to win 25-18. In the third, the Lasers were dominant throughout to win the set 25-8 and the match 3-0.
Busha registered six kills as Khadra and Dean each had four. Jach led the way with 14 assists while Mason had six digs. Dean and Troy Stancampiano (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville East) each had five digs.
D'Youville will resume game action next weekend as they travel to Alvernia to play Alverina on Friday, February 14 at 7:00pm. They will then play Baruch and Neumann at Alvernia on Saturday at 12:00pm and 2:00pm.
