Reading, PA - The D'Youville men's volleyball team concluded their time at Alvernia on Saturday afternoon, falling to the Baruch Bearcats 3-1 and defeating the Neumann Knights 3-0.
D'Youville jumped out to a 7-3 early in their first match of the day. Baruch would then make a comeback to take over the lead at 10-8 as the two teams would go back-and-forth throughout the first. Tied at 20, the Spartans would close out the first strong as they took the first 25-22.
Like in the first, the Spartans would get out to an early lead in the second. D'Youville led 9-2 and again at 14-8 before the Bearcats would come roaring back by scoring 12 of the next 15 points to lead 20-17. The Spartans would get back to within one of the Baruch lead, but they were unable to take the second as they fell 22-25.
The third and fourth sets saw the Bearcats get out to early leads that the Spartans were unable to overcome. Baruch led 16-5 on their way to a 25-11 third set win and then went ahead 15-7 in the fourth before winning 25-14, taking the match 3-1.
Dan Busha (Hamburg, NY/St. Francis) led the team with a career-high 12 kills, adding a career-high 10 digs for his first career double-double. Ali Khadra (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville East) added eight kills with three blocks. Karl Jauch (Lockport, NY/Starpoint) recorded 25 assists while Mitch Mason (Eden, NY/Eden) tallied 11 digs.
Joshua Hoy (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) and Anthony Dean (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Falls) had seven digs each while Danny Steck (Lancaster, NY/St. Francis) registered five kills. Troy Stancampiano (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville East) recorded a service ace in the match.
In their second match of the day, the Spartans turned in their strongest match of the weekend. D'Youville led 8-4 early in the first set before Neumann would come back to trail 11-12. The set would stay close late as the teams were tied at 21, but the Spartans would pull away late to win the first 25-22.
As they did in the second, D'Youville would lead 8-4 before going on a big run to lead 17-9. The lead for the Spartans grew to 10 at 21-11 and then 23-17 as they would win the second set 25-20.
The strongest set of the match for the Spartans came in the third. Despite holding a two-point lead at 8-6, D'Youville would turn up the intensity. The men would close out the match with a 6-0 run as they won the third 25-15 and the match 3-0.
Busha recorded his second career match of the day with 20 kills and 10 digs for his second consecutive double-double. Khadra added 11 kills and five digs. Jauch tallied a season-high 39 assists while Mason had a career-high 15 digs.
Steck added seven kills in the match while Hoy tallied four. Will Anderson (Lake View, NY/Frontier) registered two digs with Dean adding six. Stancampiano and Juan Centeno (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville North) each saw extended playing time in the win.
The next match for the Spartans will come this Wednesday, February 19 as they host Penn State-Behrend at 7:00pm.
