Rochester, NY - The D'Youville men's volleyball team lost a pair of matches on Saturday afternoon at Nazareth, falling to the Elizabethtown Blue Jays 3-0 and the Nazareth Golden Flyers 3-0.
D'Youville lead early in the first match of the day against Elizabethtown 7-4 before the Blue Jays would come back to lead 11-10. The two teams would then go back-and-forth down the stretch in the first with the score tied at 16, 20, and again at 23. However, the Blue Jays would score the final two points of the first to win 25-23.
After leading 6-3 in the second, Elizabethtown would let the Spartans back in the match with the scored tied 9-9. The Blue Jays would then score five of the next six to lead 14-10 and then led by three at 22-19 before winning the set 25-19.
The third set saw the Spartans get out to a 6-3 lead before the Blue Jays overtook D'Youville to go ahead 12-8. Elizabethtown would then increase their lead to 16-10 before D'Youville would trail by two at 18-16, but go on to win the third 25-19 and the match 3-0.
Dan Busha (Hamburg, NY/St. Francis) led the team with 12 kills with Joshua Hoy (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) tallying five kills while Ali Khadra (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville East) and Anthony Dean (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Falls) recording four each. Danny Steck (Lancaster, NY/St. Francis) added three kills.
The second match of the day saw the Spartans face off against the host Golden Flyers. Nazareth went ahead 12-7 in the first before the Spartans cut the deficit to two at 14-12. However, the Golden Flyers would go on to score 11 of the next 15 points to earn a 25-16 victory.
Nazareth jumped out to a big lead in the second at 6-1 and then 12-6 a few points later. The Spartans would close the gap to one at 14-15 and again trail by a small margin at 21-23 late in the second. Unfortunately for D'Youville, the Golden Flyers would pull away late to win the second 25-22.
Early in the third, the two teams were tied at 9-9 before the Golden Flyers pulled ahead 14-10. The Spartans would pull to within three at 15-18, but Nazareth would close out the third strong on a 7-1 run to win the set 25-16 and the match 3-0.
Busha led the team with seven kills with Khadra and Steck each tallying three. Jauch led the way with 13 assists while Mason tallied a team-high eight digs.
The next match for the men will come this Wednesday, February 26 as they play at Thiel at 7:00pm.
