Buffalo, NY - The D'Youville men's volleyball team won their first home match of the season on Friday evening as the men took down the visiting SUNY Potsdam Bears by the final score of 3-0.
The Spartans started off hot in the first set, getting out to an 8-2 lead over Potsdam. It would become a five-point game as the Bears trailed 10-15 and then a four-point game at 14-18, but D'Youville would go on to score the seven of the final eight points in the first to take the set 25-15.
D'Youville again had a strong showing the second, getting out to the same 8-2 lead. The lead for the Spartans then grew to double-digits at 13-3 and would not get lower than eight. Potsdam then fell behind by 11 at 10-21. By the time the Bears would bring their deficit down to single digits, it was too late as D'Youville would take the second set by the final of 25-17.
In the third, the Spartans started off well again with a 6-2 advantage. However, Potsdam would make a charge and tie the set at 7-7. D'Youville would begin to pull away, but the Bears would come right back and take the lead at 13-12. Tied at 16, the Spartans would go on a run to come close to winning the third, but the Bears would battle back to trail by one at 23-24. However, D'Youville would put the match away with one final point, winning the third 25-23 and the match 3-0.
Anthony Dean (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Falls) tallied a team-high 11 kills, followed by Dan Busha (Hamburg, NY/St. Francis) adding 10. Ali Khadra (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville East) recorded seven kills, four blocks, four digs, and two service aces.
Danny Steck (Lancaster, NY/St. Francis) tallied 12 digs to lead the team, adding six kills and three blocks. William Anderson (Lake View, NY/Frontier) had a team-high four service aces with Karl Jauch (Lockport, NY/Starpoint) tallied 28 assists with Mitch Mason (Eden, NY/Eden) coming up with eight digs.
Joshua Hoy (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Falls) added two kills in the match with Troy Stancampiano (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville East) earning one. Juan Centeno (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville North) served well in the win.
D'Youville will next host an AMCC quad match on Saturday, March 21. The men will begin the day with a match against Geneva at 10:00am and end the day at 4:00pm against Hiram. Medaille will play Geneva and Hiram between the two D'Youville matches.
