Williamsville, N.Y.- In the opening game of today's AMCC softball doubleheader, D'Youville never led until the final play of game, a two-out single by Alison Hall (Depew, NY/Depew) that scored Kalie McHenry (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home)from second base, and the Spartans battled their way to a 4-3 win.
The Spartans trailed 1-0 in the third, then tied the game in fourth after a Shannon Sutton (Lykens, PA/Upper Dauphin) sacrifice fly at the edge of the outfield scored MacKenzie Kehlenbeck (Oakfield, NY/Oakfield-Alabama). Kehlenbeck made a great slide to the outside part of the plate to beat the tag. The freshman opened the inning with a triple to deep center, one of her two hits of the game.
After yielding two runs in sixth, D'Youville answered with two in the bottom of the frame to tie. A Sutton RBI single scored Hall, and Kehenbeck advanced to home on the play on an error.
The seventh looked shaky to start. Behrend opened with two hits and had runners on first and third with no outs. Catcher Shannon Evans (Cheektowaga, NY/East Aurora) threw out the runner trying to steal second and pitcher McHenry shut the door with a fly out and a strikeout.
McHenry went the distance striking out 4 to win her fourth game of the season.
