Seventh-Inning Rally Gives Softball an Opening Game Win

Williamsville, N.Y.- A two out double in the bottom of the seventh from Ashley Covel (Bason, NY/Oakfield-Alabama) scored three and capped a four run rally that gave D'Youville a 6-5 win against Penn State Altoona in the first game of the twin-bill between two teams at the top of the AMCC standings.

D'Youville trailed 4-2 through six and gave up a home run to start the seventh. The D'Youville seventh started with a Courtney Clark (Webster, NY/Webster) walk. Lauren DeVantier (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) singled followed by a Shannon Evans (Cheektowaga, NY/East Aurora) walk. Kalie McHenry (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home) struck out then a sacrifice fly from Sara Persuitti (Cheektowaga, NY/West Seneca East) scored pinch runner Jacyln Bellanti (Buffalo, NY/Kenmore East) who slid in under the tag. Alison Hall (Cheektowaga, NY/Depew) was hit by a pitch and Coval's two-out shot was to deep right, off the outstretched glove of the fielder.

Game two saw D'Youville put up another late rally, this time to tie in the bottom in the sixth. But the Spartans were nipped in extra frames by a count of 2-1. An unearned run in the top of the ninth was the winner for he visitors.

Freshman shortstop Kehlenbeck shined in this game. Kehlenbeck had two of the three Spartan hits, a triple in the fourth inning and a two-out RBI single that tied the game in the D'Youville sixth.

In the seventh, Kehlenbeck fielded a two-hopper, touched second to start the double play and fired a strike to first to end a scoring threat. Kehlenbeck's best was in the eighth. She moved to her left, fielded a ball on the second baseman side of the bag turned and fired to first for the final out of the inning.
