Softball Stumbles in the Opener at La Roche

Softball Stumbles in the Opener at La Roche

Pittsburgh, PA-La Roche didn't qualify for the upcoming AMCC Softball Tournament, but they had a say in who was going to host the event. The Redhawks only had 3 hits in game one but that was enough to beat visiting D'Youville 3-1 and knock the Spartans out of a chance to win the AMCC regular-season title and host the end of season tournament.

Game two saw D'Youville only manage three hits, but they were all important. The Spartans scored the winning run in the top of the seventh to win 3-2 and end the day with a split. Lauren DeVantier (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) drove in Courtney Clark (Webster, NY/Webster) to take the lead for good. Clark opened the seventh with a double.

MacKenzie Kehlenbeck (Oakfield, NY/Oakfield-Alabama) opened the game's scoring with a two-run homer in the third inning after a Shannon Evans (Cheektowaga, NY/East Aurora) double.

Spartan pitcher Kalie McHenry (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home) struck out three, the last ending a La Roche rally in the seventh, to win her eighth game of the season.

D'Youville  finishes the AMCC schedule with a 13-5 record and will await word on their seed at next season's AMCC Tournament.

The Spartans will close the regular-season April 30 with a non-conference game versus Geneseo. Start time at the Amherst Northtown Center is 3:00 p.m.
