Softball Splits on Opening Day of the Season

Clermont, FL D'Youville opened the 2014 season with a 1-0 win over Carelton College (MN).

Pitcher Kalie McHenry (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home) began her second season as a Spartan by tossing a one-hit shutout and striking out eight and classmate Lauren DeVantier (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) drove home Alison Hall (Cheektowaga, NY/Depew) for the game's only run.

It is the first time since 2006 the Spartan softball program has opened the season with a win and it also marked the first career win for D'Youville Head coach Ona Halladay.

D'Youville dropped their second game of the day to Hamilton College by the score of 9-4.

MacKenzie Kehlenbeck (Oakfield, NY/Oakfield-Alabama) was 2-4 with an RBI, two stolen bases and Shannon Evans (Cheektowaga, NY/East Aurora) was 1-2 with a walk.

Jessica Banning (Amherst, NY/Amherst) started the game, ran in to trouble early and as replaced by Hannah Turek (Depew, NY/Lancaster) who came in and only gave up two hits in four innings in her first collegiate appearance.

After today's game, Spartan Head coach Ona Halladay commented "the team came out to play today. I am very pleased with our performance in the circle as a staff, and our composure at the plate. This team is committed to get better every day so we are looking forward to our next challenge tomorrow."

Tomorrow at the National Training Center in Clermont, the Spartans will play Elmhurst (Il) at 1:00 p.m. and Bethel (MN) at 3:00 p.m.
