Clermont, FL-A MacKenzie Kehlenbeck (Oakfield, NY/Oakfield-Alabama) sacrifice fly scored Lydia Monin (Buffalo, NY/Tapestry Charter School) in the bottom of the fifth and was the go ahead run giving D'Youville a 6-5 win over Rochester Institute of Technology in their first game of the day at the National Training Center in Clermont, Florida.
Freshman pitcher Hannah Turek (Depew, NY/Lancaster) settled down after a rocky start to earn her first career win.
RIT opened the game with three in the top of first but the Spartans answered in the bottom of the frame with a big inning of their own. A Lauren DeVantier (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Wheatfield) RBI single and a Shannon Evans (Cheektowaga, NY/East Aurora) three-run homer game D'Youville a 4-3 lead. An RBI infield single by DeVantier in the second inning made the score 5-3.
RIT would tie the game in the top of third with a pair of runs.
In the first three innings of her first career start, Turek gave up eight hits and five runs but over the last four innings allowed just three hits and no runs. Turek also struck out six.
D'Youville on offense would only generate six hits, highlighted by a perfect 4-4 from DeVantier, but drew seven walks. Monin had three bases on balls, the third pass set up the winning run.
In the second game of the day, Kehlenbeck would be the only Spartan to get a hit and D'Youville was shut out 4-0 by St. Thomas (MN). Only one of the four runs allowed was earned.
Thee days into their Sunshine State trip, D'Youville is 2-4 overall. The Spartans will be off tomorrow and return to the diamonds at the National Training Center Monday (March 24) for a 3:00 p.m. game versus Carthage (WI) and a 5:00 p.m. matchup with Buena Vista (IA).
