Softball Finishes Florida Trip on a Winning Note

Clermont, FL-The Spartans withstood a late rally and then went on to defeat Concordia (WI) 7-5 in eight innings. D'Youville scored two runs without a hit in the eighth to end the Florida portion of their schedule with a win.

Kalie McHenry (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home) threw her fifth complete game of the season, struck out eight, and allowed only one earned run for her second win of the season.

Lauren DeVantier (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) went 2-4 with an RBI double, and two runs scored.

Amanda Drake (West Winfield, NY/Mount Markham) tripled to open the sixth and later scored on a Lydia Monin (Buffalo, NY/Tapestry Charter School) groundout making the score 5-3. That run would be important because Concordia then tacked on two in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game at five apiece.

A scoreless seventh by each team set the stage for the Spartans' win in the first extra frame.

Playing the international tie-breaker to start the eighth, a McHenry bunt and Concordia throwing error scored Laura Wilkinson (Tonawanda, NY/Starpoint). A Stephanie Duermeyer (North Tonawanda, NY/Starpoint) sacrifice got McHenry to third where she would score on an illegal pitch.

McHenry then got two Concordia batters to pop up and made the final fielding play herself by throwing out a runner at third to end the game.

It was a great finish to a day that didn't start as well. In their first game of the afternoon, D'Youville faced sixth-ranked Luther (IA) and were defeated 16-0 in just five innings.

D'Youville heads north with a 3-7 overall record and opens the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference portion of the schedule March 30 at Penn State Altoona.
