Clermont, FL - The D'Youville Softball Team won the first game of their 2015 season Thursday, defeating Scranton University by the final score of 1-0.
D'Youville's offense started off the game off promising. In the first inning, leadoff hitter Lydia Monin (Buffalo, NY/Tapestry Charter School) doubled and was advanced to third by the next batter Alison Hall (Cheektowaga, NY/Depew). Despite the early offensive output, the next three batters for the Spartans would record outs, leaving 2 runners stranded on base.
In the second inning, AMCC Preseason Pitcher of the Year Kalie McHenry (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home) got out of trouble by striking out two straight batters, leaving 3 Scranton runners on base to start off her dominating performance.
Hannah Turek (Depew, NY/Lancaster) was the second batter up in the fourth inning and made her at-bat count. Reaching on a single, Turek saw her opportunity and stole second to get herself into scoring position. After Ashley Colan (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) reached on a walk and passed ball, Turek advanced to third. With 2 outs in the inning, Sarah Marino (Buffalo, NY/Holy Angels Academy) stepped up to bat and singled to drive in Turek from third, giving the Spartans the 1-0 lead.
The 1 run turned out to be the only run the team would need as McHenry showed why she was the 2014 AMCC Pitcher of the Year, allowing only 2 hits for the remainder of the game. McHenry went the distance, giving the Spartans their first win of the season by the final score of 1-0.
Leadoff hitter Lydia Monin led the team in their first outing with 3 hits in 4 at-bats. Sarah Marino delivered the only RBI of the game, driving in Hannah Turek who scored the lone run.
McHenry threw 7 shutout innings, allowing only 3 hits, striking out 8.
