Clermont, FL - After splitting their first day of spring training in the Sunshine State, the D'Youville Softball Team lost their first game of their doubleheader on Friday by the final score of 8-4 to the Hamilton College Continentals.
No runs were scored in the first inning between the two teams, with only 1 hit recorded. The second inning started off with the Hamilton batter reaching base on a passed ball. The runner would advance to second on the next play, which was a putout at first. A single from the next Hamilton batter would result in the first run of the game to give the Continentals a 1-0 lead. No other runs would be scored from the Continentals in the top half of the inning.
Hannah Turek (Depew, NY/Lancaster) would leadoff the inning with a single. Turek would advance to second on a wild pitch during the next at-bat. After two consecutive outs, Sarah Marino (Buffalo, NY/Holy Angels Academy) stepped up to bat and drove Turek in with a single to left field to tie the game at 1. D'Youville would score no more runs in the inning.
Hamilton wouldn't score any runs in the third, but D'Youville would began to flex their offensive muscles. Lydia Monin (Buffalo, NY/Tapestry Charter School) and Lauren DeVantier (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) would both hit singles for the Spartans early in the inning. After a throwing error, MacKenzie Kehlenbeck (Oakfield, NY/Oakfield-Alabama) would reach base, loading the bases for Turek. A drop by the Hamilton first baseman would result in the second Spartan run crossing the plate and Turek reaching base and all runners advancing.
Neither team would score a run in the 4th inning, but Hamilton would tack on 2 more runs to take a 3-2 lead in the top half of the 5th. The Continentals would add another run in the 6th inning as the result of several errors from the Spartan defense, taking a 4-2 lead. D'Youville would get 1 run back after Colan doubled to right-center field, driving in Turek from first.
The Continentals would break the game open in the 7th inning, scoring 4 runs to lead 8-3. After singles from Monin, Hall and DeVantier, Kehlenbeck would be walked, scoring Monin in the bottom of the 7th. Laura Wilkinson (Tonawanda, NY/Kenmore East) came in to pinch run for DeVantier. That run would be the last of the game for either team, with Hamilton College winning the game by the final score of 8-4.
Kalie McHenry (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home) earned the loss in the game, bringing her season record to 1-1. For the second straight day, McHenry pitched a complete game going 7 innings, striking out 7, walking 2 and giving up 3 earned runs.
