Softball Suffers Big Loss on Third Day of Spring Training

Clermont, FL - The D'Youville Softball Team suffered a big loss Saturday morning at the hands of Bethel University by the final score of 9-1. 

As she has done for every game thus far this season, leadoff hitter Lydia Monin (Buffalo, NY/Tapestry Charter School) led off the game with a hit, reaching on a double. Monin was called out on a throw from the right fielder for the first out. Two more outs would be recorded and D'Youville would record 2 hits and no runs.

In the bottom of the inning, Bethel would take a 2-0 lead after driving in 2 runs with the bases loaded and carry that lead into the first inning. D'Youville wouldn't get on base in the second inning, but Bethel would add 4 more runs thanks in part to 2 home runs. At the end of the second inning, Bethel led D'Youville 6-0.

The Spartans would finally get on the board in the third when Lauren DeVantier (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) drove in Alison Hall (Cheektowaga, NY/Depew) from second, cutting the score to 6-1. Bethel got the run back in the bottom half of the inning to make the game 7-1.

D'Youville wouldn't score in the the fourth of fifth innings, but Bethel would add a run in both innings. With a 9-1 score at the end of the fifth inning, the game ended with Bethel picking up the win.

Monin, Hall and DeVantier would pick up the only 3 hits of the game for the Spartans, with Hall accounting for the team's only run. DeVantier would bring in the only run with the team's only RBI.

Jessica Banning (Amherst, NY/Amherst) was the losing pitcher in the game, pitching 4 innings.
