Clermont, FL - After a series of rain delays, the D'Youville Softball Team won their second straight game by shutout, winning with the final score of 2-0 over Oberlin College.
Oberlin led off the game in the top of the inning with a single off of flamethrower Kalie McHenry (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home). After the first batter reached base, McHenry settled in, striking out 2 of the remaining 3 batters to end the half inning. Lauren DeVantier (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) got the first hit for the Spartans in the bottom half of the inning, but she would be the lone hit as the teams moved to the second inning.
In the second, McHenry continued her dominance allowing no runs. Hannah Turek (Depew, NY/Lancaster) led off the bottom of the second reaching base on a throwing error. McHenry grounded out to second, advancing Turek to second. Sarah Marino (Buffalo, NY/Holy Angels Academy) came to bat and reached first on a fielding error by the Oberlin left fielder. The error gave Turek the time to cross the plate, giving D'Youville the 1-0 lead.
Over the next 3 innings, neither team would cross the plate. Oberlin wouldn't record more than 1 hit in any of those innings with great pitching from McHenry and defense from the D'Youville team.
In the sixth inning, the Spartans added an insurance run. MacKenzie Kehlenbeck (Oakfield, NY/Oakfield-Alabama) singled to get on base. Kehlenbeck then stole second during the next at-bat. Turek then stepped into the box and belted a double, and as Kehlenbeck reached home, she was thrown out by the Oberlin center fielder for an out. On second, Turek advanced to third after an Ashley Colan (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) single. Helping her own cause, McHenry came to the plate, singling through the right side scoring Turek and giving the Spartans a 2-0 lead.
The 2 run lead would be all D'Youville needed as McHenry finished what she started in the seventh inning by striking out the final Oberlin batter to win the game 2-0.
McHenry once again showed why she was the AMCC Preseason Pitcher of the Year, pitching 7 shutout innings, striking out 7, walking no batters and allowing no runs. Kalie also got work done at the plate, recording 1 hit which was the second RBI of the game.
DeVantier was the team's leader in the hit department, accounting for 2 of the 7 D'Youville hits. Monin, Kehlenbeck, Turek and Colan recorded the other 4 hits for the Spartans, Marino picked up the first and game winning RBI.
The team played great defense, recording no errors in the game.
The women wrap up their Florida spring training trip on Tuesday, March 24th playing at 9am and 11am.
