Turek's Walk-Off Helps Spartans Split With Cardinals

Buffalo, NY – The D'Youville Softball Team split a rainy doubleheader against the St. John Fisher Cardinals on Thursday afternoon, defeating the Cardinals 5-4 in the first game and losing by the score of 10-5 in the second game.

After a scoreless first inning, St. John Fisher was the first team to put a run on the board. A leadoff single, followed by another single and an error gave the Cardinals the first run of the game. In the same play, a D'Youville error allowed the Cardinal batter to score as well. With no runs in the second inning, D'Youville answered with a run of their own in the third. Lydia Monin (Buffalo, NY/Tapestry Charter School) reached base, as she does so well, with a walk. Amanda Drake (West Winfield, NY/Mount Markham) got on base with an error coming from the center fielder, giving Monin the opportunity to score and cut the deficit to 1.

No runs crossed the plate in the fourth inning, but the Cardinals tacked on another run in the fifth with a sac-fly, taking the 3-1 lead. St. John Fisher would capitalize in the sixth, scoring another run and bringing the score 4-1.

In the sixth inning, the Spartans loaded the bases with 2 outs. Three straight walks to MacKenzie Kehlenbeck (Oakfield, NY/Oakfield-Alabama), Hannah Turek (Depew, NY/Lancaster) and Kalie McHenry (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home) brought Sarah Marino (Buffalo, NY/Holy Angels Academy) to the plate. After a tough at-bat, Marino drew a walk and forced in the Spartans second run.

With their last chance coming in the bottom of the seventh, the Spartans made it count. Monin once again reached base on a walk, followed by Drake getting on base from an error. With a Lauren DeVantier (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) single, Monin scored to cut the lead to 4-3. Turek came to bat and singled, scoring Drake. With a throw to the plate, the Cardinal catcher tried to throw out DeVantier advancing to third, but threw the ball into the outfield. DeVantier then came into score, giving the Spartans the walk-off 5-4 win.

McHenry picked up fifth win of the season. In 7 innings of work, McHenry fanned 3 batters and allowed 2 earned runs. DeVantier led the team with 2 hits. Monin was a patient hitter all game long, coaxing 3 walks from the Cardinal pitcher. Not only was she patient at the plate, but Monin scored a team high 2 runs.

In the second game of the doubleheader, the Spartans didn't fair quite as well, losing 10-5.

St. John Fisher got out to an early 2-0 lead after a string of errors from the Spartan defense in the first inning. D'Youville would jump back out in front in a 3-run third inning. Lydia Monin drove in Jessica Banning (Amherst, NY/Amherst). Amanda Drake was hit by pitch to move Monin into scoring position, but both were driven in on a Laruen DeVantier triple, giving D'Youville the 3-2 lead.

The Cardinals would answer back in the fourth inning to tie the game at 3. In the fifth, they added on 5 more runs to extend their lead 8-3. D'Youville chipped away at the lead in the bottom of the inning with MacKenzie Kehlenbeck driving in Monin from third. The game one hero, Hannah Turek, singled to score Drake.

D'Youville couldn't make up the offense late, with St. John Fisher scoring a run in both the top of the sixth and seventh innings, winning the game by the final score of 10-5.

Jessica Banning suffered the loss in the game, giving up 7 earned runs in 6.1 innings pitched. Hannah Turek pitched 2/3 of an inning in relief. The one and two hitters in Monin and Drake each scored 2 runs, with Banning picking up 1 herself. Banning helped her own cause by getting 3 hits, followed by Monin's 2.

The next game for the women will be at home on Monday, April 6th against the Franciscan Barons. The doubleheader will begin at 3pm with the second game slated for 5pm.
