Softball Takes Second Half of Doubleheader In Driving Rain

Buffalo, NY – Battling through a wet and windy afternoon at the D'Youville Athletic Complex on Thursday, the D'Youville Softball Team split their doubleheader against the Medaille Mavericks, losing the first game 6-0 and taking the second game 13-6.

D'Youville didn't have a very successful outing in the first game against the Mavericks. Starting pitcher Kalie McHenry (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home) allowed 2 home runs, both 2 run shots. MacKenzie Kehlenbeck (Oakfield, NY/Oakfield-Alabama) and McHenry both earned to walks in the shutout, but no runs were scored. Alison Hall (Cheektowaga, NY/Depew) recorded the only hit for the Spartans in the 6-0 loss.

The second game of the doubleheader fared much better for D'Youville. Hannah Turek (Depew, NY/Lancaster) took the mound and immediately helped her own cause. In the first inning, Lydia Monin (Buffalo, NY/Tapestry Charter School) reached first on an error. She was moved to second from a Lauren DeVantier (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) single. After MacKenzie Kehlenbeck was hit by a pitch, Monin advanced to third and DeVantier to second, Turek came to bat. Hannah drove a ball deep into the outfield, allowing Monin to tag up and score on the sac-fly.

Medaille tied the game in the bottom of the inning, but the Spartans answered back in the second inning. Kalie McHenry started off the inning with a walk. McHenry was driven in by the next batter, Amanda Drake (West Winfield, NY/Mount Markham) who slapped a triple. Next in the box was Monin, who singled and scored Drake. The Spartans ended the second inning up on the Mavericks 3-1.

No runs would cross the plate in the third inning, but the fourth inning would be a different story. Catcher Ashley Colan (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) led off the inning with a single. Drake followed up Colan's single with one of her own, and then a Monin walk loaded the bases. Alison Hall hit into a fielder's choice with Colan forced out at home. With the bases loaded and 2 outs, DeVantier stepped to the plate and cleared the bases with one swing. DeVantier's double scored Drake, Monin and Hall and gave D'Youville a 6-1 lead.

Despite D'Youville's run production being doubled in one inning, Medaille worked their way back into the game, tying it after a run in the fourth, fifth and 2 in the sixth.

With the game tied entering the seventh inning, D'Youville showed that they did not want the game going to extras. Turek began the inning on a single. She then stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Sarah Marino (Buffalo, NY/Holy Angels Academy) walked for the next batter McHenry who reached on a fielder's choice. The fielder's choice scored Turek and moved Marino to second. The next batter, Colan, walked to load the bases.

Back-to-back walks to Drake and Monin drove in 2 runs and left the bases loaded. Hall then came to the plate and doubled, scoring Colan and Drake. With runners on second and third, Kehlenbeck walked to again load the bases. Coming to the plate for the second time in the inning was Turek, who again helped her own cause by driving in Monin. Marino finished off the scoring for the inning by singling and bringing Hall in to make the score 13-6, which would be the final score.

Turek picked up her second straight win, going 7 innings and striking out 3. At the plate, Hannah recorded 2 hits and drove in 2, scoring a run herself. DeVantier led the team with 3 RBIs while Monin and Drake tied for the team lead in runs with 3. Monin, Drake, Turek and Hall all tallied 2 RBIs each. Hall and McHenry both scored 2 runs apiece.

The next games for the Spartans will be on Saturday, April 11th against La Roche at the D'Youville Athletic Complex. The doubleheader will begin at 1pm with the second game scheduled to start at 3pm.
