Buffalo, NY – Taking the first game of the doubleheader 7-3, the D'Youville Softball Team also took game two against the La Roche Redhawks by the final score of 9-1.
For the second straight game, the Spartans began their scoring in the bottom of the second inning. MacKenzie Kehlenbeck (Oakfield, NY/Oakfield-Alabama) cruised into third for a triple for the first baserunner of the inning. The next batter, Sarah Marino (Buffalo, NY/Holy Angels Academy) drove in Kehlenbeck on a sac-fly for the first run of the game.
In the third inning, D'Youville's offense surged for 3 more runs. The speedy Amanda Drake (West Winfield, NY/Mount Markham) led off the inning with a double followed Lauren DeVantier (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) singling, moving Drake to third. Up next, Hannah Turek (Depew, NY/Lancaster) grounded out to the second baseman, scoring Drake but DeVantier was tagged out and Turek reached first. Alison Hall (Cheektowaga, NY/Depew) singled, moving Turek to third. Kehlenbeck came up to bat and doubled, driving in Turek and moved Hall to third. The third run of the inning came off the bat of Marino, who drove in Hall on her second sac-fly of the game.
La Roche would score their lone run of the game in the top of the fifth inning, but D'Youville would get the run back and then some in the bottom of the inning. Hall led off the inning with a single. She was driven in by another triple from Kehlenbeck, and Marino would drive in Kehlenbeck with a single. The bases were loaded for Lydia Monin (Buffalo, NY/Tapestry Charter School) after catcher Ashley Colan (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) singled and pitcher Kalie McHenry (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home). Monin was hit by a pitch, driving in Marino from third.
Drake would come to the plate and bring Colan home on a fielder's choice. DeVantier would single to again load the bases. Continuing her hot hitting, Turek would come to bat and single, scoring Monin and ending the game in her third walk-off of the season by the final of 9-1.
Kalie McHenry picked up her second win of the day after pitching her second complete game. The junior gave up 1 run in 5 innings of work and recorded 5 strikeouts. Sarah Marino led the team with 3 RBIs, followed by 2 each from Hannah Turek and MacKenzie Kehlenbeck. Lauren DeVantier and Kehlenbeck each had 3 hits while Ashley Colan and McHenry each recorded 2.
The next pair of games for the Spartans come tomorrow, Sunday April 12th as the team travels to the Pitt.-Bradford tomorrow to play at 1 and 3pm.
