Bradford, PA – On the road for their first away conference doubleheader, the D'Youville Softball Team swept the Pitt.-Bradford Panthers Sunday by the scores of 12-4 in game one and 5-4 in game two for an undefeated weekend of AMCC play.
Amanda Drake (West Winfield, NY/Mount Markham) was the first runner of the game, reaching base with a walk. The next batter, Lauren DeVantier (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) grounded into a fielder's choice but reached base after Drake was out at second. DeVantier advanced to second on a wild pitch and was then driven in by Hannah Turek (Depew, NY/Lancaster) who singled and advanced to second on the throw. Alison Hall (Cheektowaga, NY/Depew) continued her hot hitting to score Turek on a double. Another hitter who has been on fire as of late, MacKenzie Kehlenbeck (Oakfield, NY/Oakfield-Alabama) singled to score Hall, giving the Spartans a 3-0 lead.
The runs continued to come for the Spartans in the second inning. Kalie McHenry (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home), Lydia Monin (Buffalo, NY/Tapestry Charter School) and Drake were on with the bases loaded for DeVantier. A sac-fly from the Spartan's first baseman made the score 4-0 as McHenry scored from third. Turek reached base on a throwing error from the Bradford shortstop, giving Monin the opportunity to score. Next up, Hall once again got on base by driving in Drake with a single. With 2 runners on, Kehlenbeck stepped into the batter's box and belted her second homerun of the season, scoring Turek and Hall for a 9-0 lead.
Again the Spartans would add a run in the top of the inning, with Drake doubling in Monin in the top of the third after Monin reached base with a walk. The runs continued to roll in after Turek singled and Kehlenbeck tripled to make the game 11-0 Spartans.
Bradford would score their first run of the game in the bottom of the fourth, but D'Youville would get the run back in the bottom of the inning. Stephanie Duermeyer (North Tonawanda, NY/Starpoint) pinch hit for Monin and made the most of it, singling up the middle. Later in the inning, Turek singled, scoring Duermeyer from second after she was moved there when DeVantier singled.
The Panthers would score 3 runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, but they couldn't close the gap and would lose by the final score of 12-4 to the Spartans.
Kalie McHerny earned her 9th win of the season and her third of the weekend after 3 innings pitched, allowing no runs and striking out 2. Jessica Banning (Amherst, NY/Amherst) came in relief of McHenry and pitched 2 innings.
MacKenzie Kehlenbeck was the offensive leader for the Spartans in game one. The junior shortstop had 5 RBIs on 3 hits and smashing her second homerun of the year. Hannah Turek had 3 hits and 3 runs of her own, tying with Alison Hall for second on the team with 2 RBIs.
