Buffalo, NY - Playing in the last game of the first day of the AMCC Softball Playoffs, the D'Youville Softball Team did not disappoint, winning their first game of the tournament by defeating the La Roche Redhawks 3-0.
The Spartans threatened in the first inning, but would get their first run in the second inning. Senior Alison Hall (Cheektowaga, NY/Depew) was the first baserunner of the inning, reaching on an error. Singles from MacKenzie Kehlenbeck (Oakfield, NY/Oakfield-Alabama) and Jessica Banning (Amherst, NY/Amherst), loading the bases. Pitcher Kalie McHenry (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home) helped her own cause and drove in the first run of the game on a sac-fly.
In the second inning, D'Youville would tack on another run to their 1-0 lead. D'Youville Female Athlete of the Year Amanda Drake (West Winfield, NY/Mount Markham) reached third to leadoff the inning. Lauren DeVantier (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) then drove in Drake from third on a groundout to the second baseman, making the game 2-0 D'Youville.
For the third straight inning, the Spartans would add another run. Lydia Monin (Buffalo, NY/Tapestry Charter School) came to the plate with McHenry on first and Banning on second. A single from Monin drove in Banning to make the game 3-0 for the game's final run.
Kalie McHenry showed why she was one of the best players in the AMCC all season long as she went 7 innings, allowed no runs with 4 hits and struck out 6. McHenry picked up the game winning RBI, with additional RBIs from DeVantier and Monin.
D'Youville will play in game 7 of the tournament (game 3 of the day) on Saturday, May 2nd against Penn State-Behrend. The game is scheduled to begin at roughly 1pm.
