Spartans Split A Pair of Extra Inning Games On Day Two of Spring Training

Clermont, FL – The D'Youville softball team split a pair of extra-inning games on Saturday evening, defeating the Washington & Jefferson Presidents 4-3 and losing to the St. Lawrence Saints 4-3.

It wasn't until the top of the fifth in game one where the first run would cross the plate. Lauren Gawlak (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) led off the inning with a single, followed by a walk to Lydia Monin (Buffalo, NY/Tapestry Charter School). With two outs in the inning, pitcher Hannah Turek (Depew, NY/Lancaster) doubled to right field, scoring Gawlak and Monin and giving the Spartans the first two runs of the game.

In the bottom of the inning, the Presidents cut the Spartan's lead in half after an RBI double. However, D'Youville would get that run back in the top of sixth. Victoria Purucker (North Tonawanda, NY/Starpoint) led off the inning with a single to right field. Two batters later, Gawlak came to bat again and drove in Purucker from third with a single down the left field line. The inning ended with D'Youville leading 3-1.

Down to their final out, Washington & Jefferson would score two runs in the bottom of the seventh after two D'Youville errors, tying the game at 3-3. The two teams would go to extra innings, but one inning was all that was needed.

Turek started off the inning on second base due to the international tie-breaker rule, which has the batter out in the previous inning beginning the inning on second base. After a Darian Evans (Brant, NY/Lake Shore) sac bunt to move Turek to third, Purucker singled and drove her in for the game winning run.

Turek was excellent in the first game of the day. She pitched five innings and gave up one run while scoring the game winning run and driving in two runs to go with three hits. Gawlak had an outstanding game, driving in a run, scoring a run and tying Turek for the team lead with three hits. Purucker drove in the game winning run to go with scoring a run and two hits.

Kalie McHenry (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home) picked up her first win of the season after coming in for Turek and pitching three innings.

In game number two of the evening, St. Lawrence jumped on the Spartans early, grabbing a 2-0 lead in the second inning. D'Youville's offense wouldn't come to life until the bottom of the seventh. Gawlak reached second on an error by the center fielder and was in scoring position with no outs. Monin then stepped to the plate and belted a double to left center and scored Gawlak to cut the Saint's lead in half.

Following a single from Lauren DeVantier (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) that moved Monin to third, Turek came to the plate and collected her third RBI of the day, driving in Monin for the tying run on a sac-fly. The two teams would head to extra innings tied at 2-2.

With a runner on second, St. Lawrence began the inning with back-to-back doubles and they quickly gathered a 4-2 lead. The game went to the bottom of the inning where after being placed on second, Evans was moved to third by a Purucker sac-bunt. Helping her own cause, McHenry drove in Evans to get the Spartans to within one of the Saint's lead. However, the Spartans fells short in their second comeback attempt, losing to St. Lawrence 4-3.

McHenry pitched a complete game, striking out seven and allowing three earned runs. DeVantier led the team with three hits, followed by two from McHenry and Monin, who each had RBI.

D'Youville will be back at it tomorrow, Sunday March 20th to play Buena Vista at 5pm and Hamilton at 7pm.
