D'Youville Bats Struggle After Being Swept On Day Three in Florida

Clermont, FL – The D'Youville softball team dropped both games on their third day of spring training after losing 5-0 to Buena Vista and 8-3 to Hamilton.

D'Youville's bats struggled in game one against Buena Vista. The Beavers were first on the board in the bottom of the first inning scoring two runs to take a 2-0 lead. They then added a run in the bottom of the third and two more in the bottom of the fifth. Buena Vista would go on to win the game 5-0.

Hannah Turek (Depew, NY/Lancaster) led the team with two hits, followed by Lauren DeVantier (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) and Kalie McHenry (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home) with one each. McHenry pitched a complete game, giving up four earned runs in 6.0 innings and struck out eight.

Against Hamilton in the second game of the day, D'Youville struck first in the bottom of the first inning. Lydia Monin (Buffalo, NY/Tapestry Charter School) led off the inning with a walk and moved to third following a Sierra Belkota (North Tonawanda, NY/Starpoint) bunt and error by the Hamilton catcher. Two batters later, Darian Evans (Brant, NY/Lake Shore) grounded out to second but drove in Monin for the first run of the game and gave the Spartans a 1-0 lead at the end of one.

In the bottom of the second, the Spartans doubled their lead. Lauren Gawlak (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) got on base with a walk. Monin then came to the plate and belted a triple to left center field, driving in Gawlak and give D'Youville a 2-0 lead.

Hamilton cut the lead in half with a run in the top of the third, but broke the game open in the fourth. They loaded the bases and then had four straight hits, scoring six runs and took a 7-2 lead over the Spartans. They then added another run in the top of the fifth for an 8-2 lead.

With their final chance in the bottom of the seventh, Gawlak led off the inning with a single. As she did in the second, Monin came to bat and hit another triple to left center and drove in Gawlak. Hamilton would get out of the inning allowing the one run and win the game by the final of 8-3.

Monin led the team with two BRI and tied McHenry with two hits to lead the team. Gawlak scored two runs to lead the team. Turek picked up the loss after five innings of work. McHenry came in to pitch two innings and struck out four.
