Spartan's Bats Come to Life In Sweep of Colby, Thomas

Clermont, FL – The D'Youville softball team broke out on Tuesday afternoon, scoring 16 total runs in the team's 5-1 win over the Colby Mules and 11-6 win over the Thomas Terriers and improved to 3-5.

D'Youville got the party started in the first inning after MacKenzie Kehlenbeck (Alabama, NY/Oakfield-Alabama) and Lauren DeVantier (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) reached base with one out. The next batter, Hannah Turek (Depew, NY/Lancaster) then singled, driving in both baserunners and gave the Spartans a 2-0 lead.

In the top of the fourth, pitcher Kalie McHenry (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home) helped her own cause by homering to center field and gave D'Youville a 3-0 lead. With two outs, the Spartans loaded the bases with walks to Ashley Colan (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) and Lydia Monin (Buffalo, NY/Tapestry Charter School) and a Lauren Gawlak (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) single sandwiched in the middle of the two walks. In the next at-bat, Kehlenbeck singled through the left side and scored Colan from third for a 4-0 D'Youville lead.

Still with a 4-0 lead in the top of the sixth, Gawlak came up and smashed her first career home run to right center and extended the Spartan's lead to 5-0. Colby would homer in the bottom of the sixth, cutting the lead to 5-1 but that would be the only run to cross the plate for the Mules as the Spartans would go on to win 5-1.

McHenry was dominate on both sides of the ball in game one of the day, pitching a complete game going seven innings and allowing one earned runs with five hits and struck out seven. At the plate, Kalie had two hits with one run and one RBI.

Turek, Kehlenbeck and Gawlak each had two hits while Turek had a team high two RBI and Gawlak had one. Monin earned two walks. The team had 10 hits and five walks total.

D'Youville faced Thomas in game number two and for the second consecutive game, D'Youville got the scoring started in the top of the first. Monin led off the game with a single to left field. Kehlenbeck then singled, but her and Monin came all the way around to score on an error on the catcher. After the top of the first inning, the Spartans led 2-0.

Thomas answered back in the bottom of the inning to take the lead. The Terriers score five runs on four hits and took a 5-2 lead. The Spartans would chip away at the lead in the bottom of the third after Monin reached base on an error and then took second. DeVantier then singled to center, driving in Monin, but Lauren was thrown out at second trying to stretch the single into a double. Thomas would get the run back in the bottom of the third, taking a 6-3 lead.

D'Youville once again chipped away at the lead in the fifth. Monin again reached base, this time on a double to right center. Kehlenbeck then drove in Lydia on a single, making the game 6-4.

In the sixth inning, the Spartans broke the game open. McHenry singled to get on base, followed by Victoria Purucker (North Tonawanda, NY/Starpoint) getting on base because of an error. Laura Wilkinson (Tonawanda, NY/Kenmore East) pinch ran for Purucker and moved to second after Colan reached on an error, scoring McHenry to make the game 6-5.

Gawlak singled to load the bases, and then Monin came to bat and singled, driving in Wilkinson and Colan, giving D'Youville the lead back at 7-6. Kehlenbeck singled, driving in Gawlak. DeVantier then doubled, clearing the bases and bringing home Monin and Kehlenbeck and pushing the Spartans to a 10-6 lead. Darian Evans (Brant, NY/Lake Shore) reached base on a fielder's choice but it was enough to bring DeVantier home and D'Youville took over an 11-6 commanding lead.

The massive sixth inning for the Spartans gave them the victory by the final score of 11-6 for their second win of the day. McHenry picked up her second win of the day pitching four innings of relief, allowing three hits and striking out nine. She also added two hits at the plate.

The top of the order for D'Youville was outstanding. Monin set the table for the rest of the lineup with three hits, two RBI and a team high four runs. Right behind her in the order was Kehlenbeck, who also had three hits and two RBI and scored two runs. The third batter in the order, DeVantier, scored a run to go with two hits and two RBI. Colan added a RBI.

D'Youville will conclude their spring training in Florida on Wednesday, March 23rd as the play Elmhurst at 1pm and Hendrix at 3pm.
