D'Youville Thumps Franciscan With Home Run Barrage In Doubleheader Sweep

Steubenville, OH – The D'Youville softball team combined for 33 runs in their doubleheader sweep of the Franciscan Barons on Saturday afternoon with a 16-1 game one win and a 17-1 win in game two.

D'Youville made their impact early in game one. Lydia Monin (Buffalo, NY/Tapestry Charter School) led off the game with a walk, followed by a Darian Evans (Brant, NY/Lake Shore) single and a Lauren DeVantier (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) walk to load the bases. Next-up, Hannah Turek (Depew, NY/Lancaster) doubled to drive in Monin and Evans, making the game 2-0. Three batters later, MacKenzie Kehlenbeck (Alabama, NY/Oakfield-Alabama) also doubled to center, driving in DeVantier and Turek, making the game 4-0.

In the bottom of the second, the Spartans would add another run to their lead. With two outs, Evans came to bat and hit her first career home run, making the game 5-0. Several more Spartans would get their first home runs of the season in the next inning, increasing the D'Youville lead.

With one out in the third, Kehlenbeck hit her first home run of the season. Ashley Colan (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) then walked and she was moved to third with a Lauren Gawlak (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) double. Monin then reached first on an error, driving in Colan. In the next at-bat, Evans hit a homer for the consecutive inning, driving in three and making the game 10-0.

Adding to the home run barrage, DeVantier then homered for her first of the season. Turek and Victoria Purucker (North Tonawanda, NY/Starpoint) then both reached base only to come right back home with a Kehlenbeck home run. A fourth home run of the inning came off the bat of Colan, who hit her first career homer. Franciscan would score a run in the bottom of the inning, making the score 15-1 after three.

The top of the fourth saw two Spartans tally their first hits of the season. Both Krista Cornell (North Tonawanda, NY/Kenmore East) and Jamie Royer (Marion, NY/Marion) singled for the only hits of the inning.

Colan would lead off the fifth with a double and was driven in by Monin on a single two at-bats later. The run increased the Spartan lead to 16-1, and D'Youville would go on to take game one over the Barons by the same score.

Kalie McHenry (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home) picked up her seventh with of the season, allowing one earned run over five innings. She struck out nine in her ninth complete game of the season. Kehlenbeck led the team with six RBI in the game. Evans and Kehlenbeck each had two home runs while Evans, Kehlenbeck and Turek all had three hits. Six different players recorded an RBI and 10 players recorded a hit.

Game number two started off in a similar fashion for the Spartans, taking an early lead. Monin led off the game with a single, advancing to second on a passed ball. DeVantier then singled, moving Monin to third and then stealing second. Both runners would then score two at-bats later as McHenry doubled to center. Purucker then singled after McHenry, driving her in. As she did twice in the first game, Kehlenbeck would homer, driving in her and Purucker and make the game 5-0.

Franciscan would score a run in the bottom of the first, but the Spartans would answer in the top of the second. With the bases loaded, Turek doubled to score Monin and Gawlak, moving DeVantier to third. Two at-bats later, Purucker would reach first on an error, scoring DeVantier to make the game 8-1.

In the top of the fourth, Turek added another RBI to her day by driving in DeVantier who was hit by a pitch to begin the inning. Three batters later, Laura Wilkinson (North Tonawanda, NY/Kenmore East) picked up her first RBI of the season by driving in Turek from third.

D'Youville would tack on several more runs in the fifth inning. Monin and Evans both reached base to begin the inning. DeVantier drove in Monin with a single, followed by Turek singling in Evans. Two batters later, Kehlenbeck doubled to score DeVantier and Turek. Gawlak singled two batters later, scoring Purucker, who reached on a single, and Kehlenbeck. Evans then came back up to bat, driving in Gawlak on a double. The Spartans would make the score 17-1 and go on to with the game by the same score.

McHenry picked up her second win of the day in as many attempts. Her second complete game also went five innings and she allowed no earned runs, striking out six. Turek and Kehlenbeck led the team with four RBI each, while Turek led the team with three hits. Five different Spartans each had two hits as well as at least two RBI. DeVantier led the team with four runs, followed by three from Monin.

D'Youville will play next on Tuesday, April 5th as they host the Pitt.-Bradford Panthers at 3/5pm at Dobson Field.
