Softball Stays Unbeaten In Conference Play With Sweep of Mavericks

Buffalo, NY – The D'Youville softball team continued on their conference winning streak by defeating the Medaille Mavericks Wednesday afternoon by the scores of 5-3 and 7-4.

The first runs of the game came off the bat of MacKenzie Kehlenbeck (Alabama, NY/Oakfield-Alabama) in the bottom of the second as the shortstop homered to center field, driving in Victoria Purucker (North Tonawanda, NY/Starpoint) for a 2-0 lead. D'Youville would add another run in the bottom of the third as Lydia Monin (Buffalo, NY/Tapestry Charter School) scored on an error from the Medaille right fielder and increased the lead to 3-0.

In the following inning, Purucker led off the inning with a single and was moved to second on a sac-bunt. Victoria would then score two batters later as Lauren Gawlak (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) singled, making the game 4-0 D'Youville.

Medaille would respond in the top of the fifth with two runs to cut the lead in half at 4-2. However, Purucker would provide more offense in the bottom of the inning. Darian Evans (Brant, NY/Lake Shore) reached second on an error by the shortstop. Three batters later, Purucker singled, driving in Evans to make the game 5-2.

Down to the last inning, Medaille scored a run in the bottom of the seventh to make the game 5-3, but the Spartans would get two more outs and win the game  5-3.

Purucker was a key source of offense for D'Youville, leading the team with two runs and two hits, while also driving in a run. Kehlenbeck led the team with two RBI. Pitcher Kalie McHenry (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home) pitched a complete game over seven innings, allowing two earned runs and striking out seven.

The Spartans were first on the board again in the back end of the doubleheader. McHenry led off the bottom of the second with a single to the shortstop. She then moved to third with two outs and was driven in by Ashley Colan (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) to give D'Youville the 1-0 lead.

The Mavericks would tie the game in the top of the third with a run of their own but D'Youville would answer in the fourth to take the lead back. McHenry led off the inning with a walk, followed by Purucker getting on with an error. Both runners would move up a base on a sac-bunt from Kehlenbeck and score in the next two at-bats.

Colan would fly out to right field, scoring McHenry and take the lead at 2-1. Gawlak would then single, scoring Purucker and adding to the lead at 3-1. Evans would lead off the bottom of the fifth after getting hit by a pitch. She would then score two batters later with a double from McHenry and the Spartans grabbed a 5-1 lead.

Medaille would make a game of it in the sixth, scoring two runs and closing the lead to two runs at 5-3. In the bottom half of the inning, four straight doubles would again put the game out of reach.

With two outs, Monin doubled to center field. Evans then doubled to right field, scoring Monin. Lauren DeVantier (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) then continued the trend with an RBI double of her own, scoring Evans. Hannah Turek (Depew, NY/Lancaster) then got in on the action with a third RBI double in-a-row, scoring DeVantier. The three runs in the inning would give D'Youville a 7-3 lead and the team would take game two by that same score.

The Spartans saw a balanced attack contribute to their win in game number two. Seven different players recorded a hit with three accounting for two each. Six players had at least an RBI while five scored at least a run. Evans and McHenry each recorded two hits while scoring two runs. Colan led the team with two RBI.

McHenry pitched her second complete game in as many starts, allowing three earned runs over seven innings and striking out eight.

The women will play one game on Friday, April 15th against Pitt.-Bradford at 4pm at Dobson Field. The game is the makeup game for the second half of the doubleheader that was rained out on April 6th.
