Buffalo, NY – The D'Youville softball team continued their winning ways as they swept the visiting Pitt.-Greensburg Bobcats Saturday afternoon in dramatic fashion with a walk-off 3-2 win in game one and a 3-1 victory in game two.
Greensburg broke the scoreless tie in the top of the third after a run was walked in for a 1-0 lead. They would then double their lead in the fourth inning with a sac-fly, taking a 2-0 lead over the Spartans.
In the bottom of the fourth, pitcher Kalie McHenry (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home) singled to the pitcher to start things off. Two batters later, MacKenzie Kehlenbeck (Alabama, NY/Oakfield-Alabama) doubled to center field and drove in McHenry to cut the deficit in half at 2-1.
D'Youville would continue to trail by a run heading into the bottom of the seventh. Lydia Monin (Buffalo, NY/Tapestry Charter School) led off the inning with a single. Lauren DeVantier (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) would then reach on a fielder's choice, with Monin being out at second. Next up, Hannah Turek (Depew, NY/Lancaster) singled to center, moving DeVantier to second.
McHenry would follow up with a single to center of her own, loading the bases. Down to her last strike, freshman Victoria Purucker (North Tonawanda, NY/Starpoint) put her stamp on the game by singling to left field, driving in DeVantier and Turek to give D'Youville the 3-2 walk-off win.
Purucker continued her recent tear at the plate by leading the team with three hits and driving in two runs. Monin, Turek and McHenry all had two hits, tied for second on the team. McHenry picked up her second win in as many days allowing two earned runs in seven innings. She struck out seven in her 17th complete game of the season.
The Spartans were the first on the board in the back end of the doubleheader. Monin led off the bottom of the first with a walk and was moved over to third in the next two at-bats. Turek then singled to drive in Monin and give D'Youville a 1-0 lead.
Kehlenbeck would continue her recent power surge as she would homer to lead off the bottom of the second and double D'Youville's lead to 2-0. Two innings later, Monin and Turek would combine for their second run of the game. As she did in the second, Monin led off the bottom of the fourth with a walk. She was then moved to second on a sac-bunt and Turek would drive her in with another RBI single, giving the Spartans a 3-0 lead.
The Bobcats would get a run across the plate in the top of the seventh but it wasn't enough to overtake the Spartans as D'Youville would go on to win 3-1 and remain unbeaten in conference play at 10-0.
Over seven innings, McHenry allowed one earned run and struck out four for her second win of the day. Turek led the team with two RBI while Monin was each of those runs batted in by Turek. Monin also led the team with three walks. McHenry and Turek each had two hits.
D'Youville will take a break from their conference schedule for their next pair of games as they will head to Brockport to play the Golden Eagles on Monday, April 18th at 3/5pm.
