DeVantier, Gawlak Drive D'Youville Offense Past Brockport

Brockport, NY – The D'Youville softball team took a break from their conference schedule to play a pair of non-conference games against Brockport Monday afternoon, sweeping the Golden Eagles 13-3 and 6-1.

The game was scoreless until the top of third when the Spartans went back-to-back with their big bats. Lauren Gawlak (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) led off the inning with a single up the middle. Two batters later, Darian Evans (Brant, NY/Evans) hit her third home run of the season, giving D'Youville a 2-0 lead. In the next at-bat, Lauren DeVantier (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) hit a homer of her own and gave the Spartans a 3-0 lead.

Brockport would cut the Spartan lead to one with a two-run home run in the bottom of the inning. However, D'Youville would answer right back with a familiar due in the fourth.

With one out in the inning, MacKenzie Kehlenbeck (Alabama, NY/Oakfield-Alabama) walked. Ashley Colan (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) then singled followed by a Lydia Monin (Buffalo, NY/Tapestry Charter School) walk with two outs to load the bases.

Evans came to bat for the second time in as many innings and singled to left, scoring Kehlenbeck and giving the Spartans a 4-2 lead. With the bases load, DeVantier clocked a home run for the second consecutive inning, clearing the bases and doubling D'Youville's run total from four to eight and giving the team an 8-2 lead.

In the fifth inning, Victoria Purucker (North Tonawanda, NY/Starpoint) and Kehlenbeck reached base with hits to be on second and third. Colan then singled to center, scoring Purucker and moving Kehlenbeck to third. After a pitching change, Gawlak came to bat and brought home Kehlenbeck on a grounder to second, increasing the lead to 10-2.

The Golden Eagles would score a run in the bottom of the fifth but again the Spartans would respond by tacking on more runs in the seventh. After Kehlenbeck and Colan were in scoring position with one out, Gawlak grounded to second again to drive in Kehlenbeck for a run. In the next at-bat, Monin would double to right center field, scoring Colan. To cap off her day, DeVantier would single up the middle to score Monin and increase the lead to 10 runs. D'Youville would end the game with a 13-3 victory.

DeVantier had a monster game, driving in six runs and belting two home runs. Freshman Evans was behind her with three RBI and Gawlak added two. All nine of D'Youville's hitters recorded a hit, with seven of them scoring a run. Evans, DeVantier and Colan each had three hits and Kehlenbeck led the team with three runs scored. Colan, Monin, Evans and DeVantier each had two runs scored.

Kalie McHenry (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home) pitched a complete game over seven innings allowing three runs and striking out eight.

Game two of the doubleheader would also see the Spartans getting on the board first. In the fourth inning, Hannah Turek (Depew, NY/Lancaster) led off the inning with a walk. McHenry would then reach base with a single and score two batters later due to an error by the Brockport right fielder for a 1-0 lead.

Brockport would tie the game in the bottom of the inning but the Spartans would retake their lead in the fifth. Monin walked with an out, followed by a single from Evans. DeVantier would continue to drive in runs, singling up the middle and driving in Monin. Two batters later, McHenry would single up the middle and drive in DeVantier for a 3-1 lead.

The Spartans would put the game away in the sixth with their fourth homer of the day. Kehlenbeck walked to begin the inning, stealing second and then moving to third on a wild pitch. Following a pitching change, Colan also walked to put two runners on base. The next batter, Gawlak, would hit her second home run of the season, scoring Kehlenbeck and Colan. The three runs would double D'Youville's run total to six and give D'Youville the 6-1 win.

McHenry won her second game of the day, pitching another complete game in seven innings, striking out five and allowing no earned runs. Monin led the team with three walks, also scoring a run. Six different Spartans scored a run, with McHenry leading the team by recording two hits. Gawlak led the team with three RBI.

The women will get some time off until their next game as they will play La Roche next on Saturday, April 23rd at La Roche.
