Pittsburgh, PA – The D'Youville softball team lost their first conference game of the season on Saturday afternoon 3-1, but bounced back to defeat the La Roche Redhawks in game two of the doubleheader 9-0.
In game one of the day, it wouldn't be until the fourth inning that the first run was scored. Ashley Colan (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) led off the inning with a walk. Lauren Gawlak (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) would then reach base with a single to center field. The bases would be loaded with a Darian Evans (Brant, NY/Lake Shore) single two batters later and then remained loaded as Lauren DeVantier (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) reached on a fielder's choice as Colan was called out at home. Next up, Hannah Turek (Depew, NY/Lancaster) singled to center field, driving in Gawalk from third and giving D'Youville the 1-0 lead.
La Roche would then answer back with three runs in the bottom of the inning to jump out to a 3-1 lead. The Spartan's offense was unable to get much going for the rest of the game with just two hits and the team would lose their first conference game of the season by the score of 3-1.
Gawlak was a perfect 3-3 in the game with the only run scored for the Spartans. Turek had two hits with the lone RBI and five other D'Youville players recorded a hit. Pitcher Kalie McHenry (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home) picked up the loss over six innings allowing one earned run and struck out eight.
In game two, the Spartan's offense would again get on the board first. Turek led off the second inning with a single and advanced to second on a passed ball and then third on a groundout from McHenry. In the next at-bat, Victoria Purucker (North Tonawanda, NY/Starpoint) drove in Turek with a single, making the score 1-0.
The offense would be back at it again in the fourth inning. McHenry led off with a single to right field and then stole second, advancing to third in the next at-bat. With one out, MacKenzie Kehlenbeck (Alabama, NY/Oakfield-Alabama) would then single to left, driving in McHenry. Colan would then walk, followed by a single from Gawlak to load the bases. Lydia Monin (Buffalo, NY/Tapestry Charter School) then hit a sac-fly to center, scoring Kehlenbeck and increasing the lead to 3-0.
D'Youville would pounce once again in the fifth. With one out in the inning, McHenry singled and then advanced to second on a passed ball. Purucker would then drive in McHenry for her second RBI of the game, extending the lead to 4-0.
The Spartans would break the game open in the sixth and put the game out of reach. Gawlak led off the inning with a single, followed by a single from Monin. After a walk to DeVantier to load the bases, Turek would double to drive in Gawlak and Monin for a 6-0 lead.
Next up, McHenry singled up the middle, driving in two more runs in DeVantier and Turek for an 8-0 lead. Two batters later, Kehlenbeck would single to drive home McHenry to give the Spartans a 9-0 as D'Youville would continue their shutout through the rest of the game and go on to win by the final of 9-0.
Four different players had two RBI in game two. McHenry had a team high three hits, followed by five other players with two. Turek scored two runs, which was second to McHenry's three. She also bounced back in game two to pick up her 17th win of the season over six innings, allowing no runs and striking out two.
The women will immediately return to action tomorrow, Sunday April 24th as they travel to Penn State-Altoona for the AMCC Game of the Week. Game one begins at 1pm with game two scheduled to start at 3pm.
