Strong Hitting, Pitching Lead Spartans in Sweep Over Hilbert

Hamburg, NY – The D'Youville softball team remained as the top team in the AMCC on Wednesday afternoon by defeating the Hilbert Hawks in a conference doubleheader, winning game one 8-0 and game two 10-0.

Darian Evans (Brant, NY/Lake Shore) reached base with one out in the top of the third on a throwing error from the Hilbert shortstop, with Lauren DeVantier (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) walking one batter later. With two outs, pitcher Kalie McHenry (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home) hit her second home run of the season by belting one to center field, giving the Spartans a 3-0 lead.

In the top of the fourth inning, D'Youville would add another run. In her first game back from injury, Sarah Marino (Buffalo, NY/Holy Angels Academy) singled to left field with two outs. Next up, lead-off hitter Lydian Monin (Buffalo, NY/Tapestry Charter School) doubled to left field, scoring Marino and giving the team a 4-0 lead.

D'Youville would add more runs in the final two innings of the game. Ashley Colan (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) hit her second homer of the season in the sixth for a 5-0 lead. In the seventh, DeVantier led off with a double. Two batters later, McHenry picked up her fourth RBI of the game, singling in DeVantier.

With two outs, MacKenzie Kehlenbeck (Alabama, NY/Oakfield-Alabama) reached on an error, scoring McHenry. Kehlenbeck would then score in the next at-bat on another Hilbert error, bringing the score to the final score of 8-0.

McHenry led the way for the Spartans in their first win of the day. She led the team with four RBI but also pitched a complete game, allowing two hits over seven innings and struck out eight. Monin and McHenry each had two hits, with DeVantier and McHenry each scoring two runs.

Game two of the day started off with some pop. Leading off the game, Monin hit her first career home run for a quick 1-0 lead. Hannah Turek (Depew, NY/Lancaster) reached on a fielder's choice later in the inning, with McHenry then singling in the next at-bat. The sixth batter of the inning, Kehlenbeck, then smacked her sixth homer of the season, giving the Spartans a 4-0 lead.

With two runners on in the third, Kehlenbeck scored on an error from the Hawk's pitcher to make the game 5-0. D'Youville would double their lead in the top of the sixth to put the game away.

Marino led off the inning with a walk. Back-to-back RBI doubles from Monin and Lauren Gawlak (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) increased the score to 7-0. Gawlak moved to third and was joined on base by Turek, who reached on an error. McHenry followed with a triple to right center, scoring Gawlak and Turek, driving the score to 9-0. Kehlenbeck then capped off the scoring by driving in McHenry with a groundout and giving the Spartans a 10-0 victory.

The offense was well spread out in the second victory of the day. Four players scored two runs, with three more recording two hits. Kehlenbeck led the way with four RBI, followed by Monin and McHenry with two each. Kalie had another strong outing, going six innings with no runs allowed and three strikeouts.

The Spartans will conclude their regular season on Saturday, April 30th at home against the Mount Aloysius Mounites. Game times are 1 and 3pm, with the team's five seniors being honored before game one.
