Buffalo, NY - The D'Youville softball team split a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday afternoon by taking game one against the Alfred State Pioneers 6-0 and losing game two 6-4.
In the third inning of game one, the Spartans broke the scoreless tie with their biggest inning of the game. Sierra Belkota (North Tonawanda, NY/Starpoint) led off with a walk, followed by a single from Therese Losardo (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster). An error from the Pioneer pitcher allowed Ashley Carney (Clarence, NY/Clarence) to reach base and load them with no outs.
A single from Rylie Russo (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) scored both Belkota and Losardo to make the game 2-0, moving Carney to third. A sac-fly from Hannah Turek (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) scored Carney, concluding the third with a 3-0 D'Youville lead.
D'Youville was at it again with a second multi-run inning in the fifth. Losardo walked to leadoff the inning, with Carney tripling to left center and bringing home Losardo. Russo then hit a sac-fly to left to score Carney, increasing the lead to 5-0.
Another leadoff batter reaching base allowed the Spartans to score a run, this time in the bottom of the sixth. Cameron Colan (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) smacked a doubled to left center, putting herself in scoring position. Victoria Purucker (North Tonawanda, NY/Starpoint) then singled to left, scoring Colan and making the game 6-0, which would be the final score.
Turek picked up her seventh with on the season, allowing just three hits in seven innings of work. She also struck out six in her eleventh complete game of 2017, also adding an RBI.
Russo led the team with three RBI while Carney and Losardo each accounted for two runs. Colan and Purucker each collected two hits.
The second game of the doubleheader saw Alfred State take the lead over the Spartans 4-0 through three and a half innings. In the bottom of the fourth, Lauren Gawlak (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) drove in Colan with two outs on a single to center field, making the game 4-1.
Alfred State would tack on two more runs in the sixth before the Spartans would come back and make a game of it. Purucker led off the bottom of the seventh with a triple. Megan Meyer (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) then pinch ran for Purucker and scored in the next at-bat as Gawlak drove her in, making the score 6-2.
With two outs, Russo singled to score Gawlak and advance Losardo to third, who reaced on a single two at-bats prior. Losardo then scored on a wild pitch, making the game 6-4. However the Pioneers would get the final out of the game with the next batter and hold on to win 6-4.
Gawlak recorded a team high two hits and two RBI in the game, with six other players tallying a hit. Of those players was Alexis Dymond (Kenmore, NY/Kenmore West), who started the game and allowed one earned run in 3.1 innings. Maddie Jacobs (Lake View, NY/Frontier) had two plate appearances while Sarah Marino (Buffalo, NY/Holy Angles Academy) played a solid third base.
The next pair of games for the women comes this Thursday, April 20 as they host Keuka at 3/5pm.
