Erie, PA – The D'Youville softball team suffered a pair of losses to the AMCC's best team on Wednesday afternoon, falling in game one to the Penn State-Behrend Lions 8-0 in game one and 5-1 in game two.
Behrend took control of the game in the first inning, taking a 5-0 lead. The Lions then added a run in the bottom of the fourth and two runs in the bottom of a sixth for a 8-0 victory, shutting out the Spartans in game one.
Second baseman Rylie Russo (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) led the team with two hits, with Darian Evans (Brant, NY/Lake Shore) and Victoria Purucker (North Tonawanda, NY/Starpoint) each collecting a hit. Hannah Turek (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) had the team's lone walk, but also got the start on the mound. Turek allowed three earned runs over seven innings, striking out one.
The Lions again took the lead first in game two, taking a 2-0 lead after two. In the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, Behrend added a run to reach their total of five. However in the top of the sixth, the Spartans scored their lone run of the game. Lauren Gawlak (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) led off the inning and immediately made a difference, hitting her first home run of the season. The lone run for the Spartans broke the shutout and made the final score 5-1.
Purucker led the team with two hits in the game, while Megan Meyer (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) and Rachele Anello (Buffalo, NY/Charter) each had hits for D'Youville. Alexis Dymond (Kenmore, NY/Kenmore West) got the start, allowing just two earned runs over six innings against the Lions.
The final game of the season for the Spartans will come this Saturday, April 29 as the women travel to La Roche. Game times are 1 and 3pm.
