Buffalo, NY - The Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference released the 2018 softball preseason poll Friday morning with a glimpse into the conference landscape.
Following back-to-back regular season AMCC titles and back-to-back appearances in the AMCC championship game, the Spartans failed to make the playoffs last season and have been voted on by opposing coaches to finish eighth in the AMCC this coming season. The Penn State-Behrend Lions - winners of the last three conference titles - has been selected to finish first and has the Preseason Player and Preseason Pitcher of the Year winners.
Finishing tied for second in the conference last season, Medaille and Penn State-Altoona are pegged to finish second and third this season respectively. Mount Aloysius, Pitt.-Greensburg, and Pitt.-Bradford round out the top six.
Sophomore catcher/outfielder Ashley Carney (Clarence, NY/Clarence) and junior shortstop Darian Evans (Brant, NY/Lake Shore) were recognized as players to watch for D'Youville. Carney was named an AMCC Third Team All-Conference selection her freshman season as an outfielder and led the team in average, hits, runs, triples - was tied for second in doubles, and was third in RBI. Evans led the team in home runs and was second in RBI at seasons end.
The women open their season on Friday, March 16 as they host Buffalo State, playing the first game of a doubleheader at 3:00pm. Starting on Thursday, March 22 the women will head to Clermont, FL to play 10 games for spring training. They will return home on Tuesday, April 3 as they host conference rival Medaille for a doubleheader, starting at 3:00pm.
