Clermont, FL – The D'Youville softball team returned to action in Florida as they lost a pair of games Monday morning, first to the Luther Norse 8-0 and the Kalamazoo Hornets 8-6.
D'Youville faced off against the No.9 ranked team in the nation in Luther in game one of the day. The Norse pounced early in the game with four runs in the first inning and then adding two runs in each of the third and fourth innings. The Spartans were unable to get any offense going and they fell to Luther 8-0 after five innings.
Ashley Carney (Clarence, NY/Clarence), Jackie Langer (Wexford, PA/Pine Richland), and Lauren Gawlak (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) were the only three Spartans to register hits in the game. Alexis Dymond (Kenmore, NY/Kenmore West) got her first start of the season and went 4.0 innings, allowing six earned runs and struck out one.
The Spartan offense regrouped for game two of the day and made an immediate impact. Carney led off the bottom of the first with a single and then was driven home with a Langer triple two batters later. D'Youville held a 1-0 lead through to the bottom of the third where they would have a breakout inning.
Carney began the bottom of the inning with a double, followed by a Rylie Russo (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) single. Gawlak then singled to drive in Carney followed by a Langer single to drive in Russo, making the D'Youville lead 3-0.
After Darian Evans (Brant, NY/Lake Shore) reached on a fielder's choice, the bases were loaded. Brittaney Goodrich (Eden, NY/Eden) grounded out to second in the next at-bat, but drove home Gawlak to add another run. Megan Meyer (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) also grounded out, scoring Langer. The inning was capped off with a Victoria Purucker (North Tonawanda, NY/Starpoint) single to bring home Evans and give D'Youville a commanding 6-0 lead.
Kalamazoo was able to get a run back in the top of the fourth, but the Hornets made a major dent in the score in the sixth inning. With four runs, Kalamazoo was able to make it a 6-5 game heading into the seventh. They then score three more runs to take the lead in the seventh and the Spartans were unable to answer, giving them an 8-6 loss.
Seven different players had hits for D'Youville in the game. Carney, Russo, and Langer each had two hits, while Carney led the team with two runs scored. Langer led the team with two RBI while Gawlak, Goodrich, Meyer, and Purucker each had one.
Goodrich got the start in game two of the day, allowing two earned runs in 5.2 innings pitched and struck out two. Alexa Haberer (Derby, NY/Lake Shore) came in for 1.1 innings of relief and took the loss.
The women will wrap up their time in Florida tomorrow, March 27 as they play Thomas at 9:00am and Middlebury at 11:30am.
