Buffalo, NY – The D'Youville softball team lost both games of their home opening doubleheader on Monday afternoon, falling to the Brockport Golden Eagles 9-4 in game one and 5-3 in game two.
In game one, both teams got on the board in the second inning. Brockport was the first to score in the game, putting three on the Spartans in the top of the second. D'Youville answered in the bottom of the inning as Darian Evans (Brant, NY/Lake Shore) led off with a triple.
Then with two outs, Rachel Colan (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) singled to bring in Evans and make the score 3-1. Megan Meyer (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) then singled to put two runners on and Ashley Carney (Clarence, NY/Clarence) hit the team's second triple of the inning to score Colan and Meyer, tying the score at three after two.
The Spartans then took the lead in the next inning as Lauren Gawlak (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) led off with a double. With two outs, Alexa Haberer (Derby, NY/Lake Shore) singled, advancing Gawlak to third. Victoria Purucker (North Tonawanda, NY/Starpoint) then reached base on an error, scoring Gawlak and giving D'Youville a 4-3 lead.
Brockport would put up five runs up in the fifth to take an 8-4 lead over the Spartans. They then added another run in the sixth for a 9-4 advantage, going on to defeat D'Youville by the same score.
Eight different Spartans each recorded one hit in the game, with four different players scoring runs. Carney led the team with two RBI in the game, followed by Colan with one. Haberer got the start in game one going 7.0 innings and striking out three. She allowed six earned runs.
The second game of the day began with the Golden Eagles taking the lead early with two runs in the top of the first. D'Youville came back in the bottom of the inning as Carney reached base on an error. She moved to third after a Rylie Russo (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) sac-bunt and a passed ball. With two outs, Jackie Langer (Wexford, PA/Pine Richland) singled up the middle to drive in Carney, cutting the Brockport lead in half at 2-1.
With three runs in the second, the Golden Eagles increased their lead to 5-1. The Spartans wouldn't respond until the bottom of the fifth where Carney led off the bottom of the inning with a double. She advanced to third with a Gawlak singled and Langer came up to bat, again driving in Carney to make the score 5-2.
Down to their final inning, the Spartans had some life left in their bats. Langer walked to lead off, followed by an Evans single. Two batters later, Purucker grounded out to the shortstop, scoring Langer and made the score 5-3. With the tying run at the plate, D'Youville was unable to get another run across the plate as they went on to lose game two 5-3.
Carney, Langer, and Evans each had two hits for the women in the second game. Carney led the team with two runs scored while Langer had an RBI. Brittaney Goodrich (Eden, NY/Eden) got the start on the mound and went 7.0 innings, allowing one earned run and striking out two.
The next game for the women comes this Wednesday, April 11 as they host Pitt.-Bradford for a conference doubleheader beginning at 3:00pm.
