Women Swept in First Conference Doubleheader

Steubenville, OH – The D'Youville softball team was finally able to play their first conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon and suffered a pair of defeats to the Franciscan Barons, falling in game one 12-6 and game two 3-1.

D'Youville was first to score in the bottom of the first as Ashley Carney (Clarence, NY/Clarence) reached base on an error. Rylie Russo (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) then reached base on an error, which was enough to bring home Carney for a quick 1-0 lead. After Russo had moved to third on a sac-bunt from Lauren Gawlak (Hamburg, NY/Frontier), Jackie Langer (Wexford, PA/Pine Richland) then flew out to center field to drive in Russo and give the Spartans a 2-0 lead.

In the top of the third, Franciscan scored three runs to take the lead over D'Youville. Moving to the bottom of the fourth, the Spartans scored two more runs to take the lead back. Langer led off with a walk, followed by a Megan Meyer (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) single. Alexa Haberer (Derby, NY/Lake Shore) reached on an error to drive in Langer, making the score 3-3. Two batters later, Rachel Colan (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) singled to center field and brought home Meyer, giving the Spartans a 4-3 lead after four innings.

A two-run home run from the Barons in the top of the fifth gave Franciscan the lead right back at 5-4. D'Youville answered in the bottom with Langer reaching base on an error with two outs. She moved to second after a Darian Evans (Brant, NY/Lake Shore) walk and then both runners stole a base, putting them both in scoring position. Meyer then reached base on an error to bring home Langer and tie the game at 5-5.

Franciscan broke the game open in the sixth with five runs, taking a 10-5 lead over the Spartans. Then the Barons scored two more in the top of the seventh to lead 12-5 before D'Youville scored in the bottom of the inning. Langer singled and was eventually moved to third. Haberer then reached on an error to bring home Langer for the final run of the game as D'Youville fell to Franciscan 12-6.

At the plate, Colan led the team with a 2-4 performance, continuing her recent success on offense. Haberer had a team high two RBI while Langer, Meyer, and Colan each had one. Langer had a team high three runs scored while she, Carney, and Meyer each had one hit.

Haberer pitched seven innings in the game, striking out seven. She allowed only three earned runs while walking one batter.

Game two saw the Barons score first in the top of the third, but the Spartans were able to tie it up in the bottom of the inning. With one out, Sierra Belkota (North Tonawanda, NY/Starpoint) singled on a bunt. She then moved to second and then third on a fielder's choice by Russo - whole stole second. Langer then came to the plate and singled to bring home Belkota and Russo, giving the Spartans a 2-1.

It wasn't until the sixth inning when the next run would be scored, but unfortunately for D'Youville, those runs came from the Barons. They scored two, putting them ahead late in the game and the Spartans couldn't recover, winning the game 3-1.

Belkota led the team with two hits, going 2-2 with a run scored in the game. Carney, Russo, Langer, and Brittaney Goodrich (Eden, NY/Eden) each had hits for the women as well.

Goodrich pitched her first game after her no-hitter on Thursday against Alfred State, going 7.0 innings. She allowed five hits, three earned runs, and struck out four.

The next doubleheader for the Spartans comes this Tuesday, April 17 as they play the Hilbert Hawks beginning at 3:00pm.
